Reconciliation is Best
The Quran addresses conflicts between a husband and wife, stating: “If a woman fears ill-treatment or indifference on the part of her husband, it shall be no offence for her to seek a reconciliation, for reconciliation is best.” (4:128)
Reconciliation means restoring peace, which stands in contrast to confrontation. The Quranic guidance during disputes is to favour reconciliation over conflict.
Why do conflicts arise between a man and a woman? This often happens because, for different reasons, each person has a different opinion. One may want one thing, while the other wants something else. This can lead to stubbornness, with both sides trying to assert their views.
In such cases, the wisest action is to pause, reflect, and think calmly. As someone wisely said, “Think, there must be a better way.”
To think truly means to step outside the framework of one’s own mind and try to understand another person’s point of view. It means considering an issue in terms of its consequences. Instead of judging only what is right or wrong in principle, one should ask what is practically possible and what is not.
One should try to identify the lesser evil and the greater evil, accept the lesser evil, and avoid any step that may lead to a greater evil.
The fact is that every problem begins at the level of thought, and it can be resolved only at that same level. Thinking is undoubtedly the greatest strength of any human being, whether man or woman. Losing at the level of thinking is true defeat, while winning at the level of thinking is true victory.
