3. The Sign of Nobility
According to a narration, the Prophet of Islam said: “Only a noble man honours women, and only a vile man insults them.” (Tarikh Dimashq by Ibn Asakir, Vol. 13, p. 313)
In terms of dignity and status, man and woman are equal. However, within the natural order of life, there exists a division of responsibilities. Man is generally assigned more physically demanding tasks, while woman is entrusted with gentler responsibilities.
Because of this, there is a difference in physical constitution: man is generally physically stronger, while woman is comparatively less so. This difference gives man the ability—but not the right—to misuse his strength. In God’s sight, this becomes a test for man.
Despite his physical advantage, a man must treat women with full respect. According to divine law, a noble person is one who behaves honourably towards those weaker than himself. Conversely, anyone who exploits the weak for personal gain is deemed unworthy and ignoble.
