5. Equality Between Man and Woman
At one place, the Quran records the supplication of the believers, in which they ask God for His mercy and salvation. God responds:
“Their Lord accepted their prayer, saying, ‘I will deny no man or woman among you the reward of their labours. You are members, one of another.’” (Quran, 3:195)
This verse clearly shows that, in Islam, men and women possess equal status. The phrase “you are members, one of another” indicates that their standing before God is the same. The verse further states that those who migrated, were driven from their homes, endured hardship for the sake of God, and struggled against opposing forces shall all receive His forgiveness and be granted entry into Paradise, without any distinction of gender.
Thus, Islam assigns equal moral responsibilities to both men and women. Accordingly, they share equally in reward and punishment. In other words, men and women possess equal rights as well as equal obligations.
