25. The Responsibility of Women

Concerning the responsibilities of the Prophet’s wives, the Quran declares: “Wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women. If you fear God, do not be too soft-spoken in case the ill-intentioned should feel tempted. Speak in an appropriate manner. Stay in your homes and do not flaunt your charms as in the former times of ignorance. Attend to your prayers, pay the zakat and obey God and His Messenger. Women of the [Prophet’s] Household, God seeks only to remove all impurity from you, and to make you completely pure.” (Quran, 33:32-33)

Although these verses are addressed directly to the Prophet’s wives, in their broader sense, they apply to all women who, besides managing their personal and domestic duties, also take on social responsibilities and, through such work, may necessarily interact with men.

For women like these, the Quran defines proper conduct: they should perform their duties while maintaining their feminine dignity and moral restraint. The key principle is balance—fulfilling obligations and engaging with society without compromising propriety, virtue, or ethical responsibility.

Even while executing their public or leadership roles, they must still maintain modesty and moral integrity without compromise.
