9. A Supportive Life Partner
Thawban narrates that when the verse: “Those who hoard gold and silver…” (9:34), was revealed, we were travelling with the Prophet. Some of his Companions said, “Since this warning concerns gold and silver, we wish we knew what kind of wealth was truly worth acquiring.”
The Prophet replied: “The most valuable things a person can have are a tongue that remembers God, a heart filled with gratitude, and a believing wife who supports him in his faith.” (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 3094; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 1856)
Material wealth offers only temporary comfort in this worldly life. True wealth, however, lies in remembrance, gratitude, and faith, for these provide lasting comfort in the eternal life of the Hereafter.
Remembrance means keeping one’s thoughts focused on Allah and constantly recalling His presence. Gratitude means having a sincere awareness of Allah’s blessings and appreciating them from the heart. Faith refers to the knowledge of Allah—a belief rooted in the heart and developed through conscious awareness of His presence and attributes.
In these respects, a wife can be a man’s greatest source of support. When husband and wife regularly share their thoughts and reflections, both benefit spiritually. Their conversations deepen their remembrance and awareness of God. By speaking about the blessings He has bestowed upon them, they strengthen feelings of gratitude in one another. By reflecting together on God and His attributes, they both deepen their realization of Him.
