27. The Qualities of God-Fearing Women

In the Quran, the qualities of God-fearing men and women are described in the following verses:

“Surely, for men and women who have surrendered [to God]—believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, patient men and patient women, humble men and humble women, charitable men and charitable women, fasting men and fasting women, men and women who guard their chastity, men and women who are ever mindful of God—God is ready with forgiveness and an immense reward. It is not fitting for a believing man or woman to exercise any choice in his or her own affairs once God and His Messenger have reached a decision upon them. Anyone who disobeys God and His Messenger is in manifest error.” (Quran, 33:35-36)

These verses describe the ideal qualities of a believing man or woman—the kind of person God wishes them to become. The Quran highlights ten key attributes: Islam (submission), Iman (faith), Qunut (devotion), Sidq (truthfulness), Sabr (patience), Khushu’ (humility), Sadaqah (charity), Sawm (self-control through fasting), ‘Iffah (chastity), and Dhikr-Allah (remembrance of God).

Within these ten attributes lies the true essence of Islamic belief and character.

Whoever hopes for God’s forgiveness and reward must fully submit to His command, hold unwavering conviction, and dedicate their entire being to serving God. Such a person must live in harmony between words and actions, consistently upholding truth in every circumstance. A profound awareness of God’s greatness should instil humility, while helping others is regarded as a personal duty. Self-control through fasting, maintenance of purity and chastity, and continual remembrance of God should shape their daily life.

These virtues are expected equally of men and women. While expressions may vary, the core principles remain unchanged. Acceptance by God depends on possessing these ten attributes.

In a world of trials, the ultimate safeguard is absolute obedience to God and His Messenger. Whenever personal desire conflicts with divine command, one must, with sincere intention and a willing heart, prioritize the command of God and His Messenger, setting aside personal inclinations.
