16. Believing Men and Believing Women
The Quran states: “The believers, both men and women, are friends to each other; they enjoin what is good and forbid evil, they attend to their prayers and pay the alms and obey God and His Messenger. On these God will have mercy, for God is almighty and wise. God has promised the believers, both men and women, Gardens through which rivers flow, wherein they will abide, and fine dwelling places in Gardens of eternity. But the good pleasure of God is greater still. That is the supreme achievement.” (Quran, 9:71-72)
This passage shows that believing men and believing women are equal in moral and spiritual responsibility. At the individual level, Islam applies the same ethical standards to both. At the social level, they are expected to work together in promoting what is right and preventing what is wrong. This shared responsibility is expressed in the Quranic phrase ba‘duhum awliya’u ba‘d (9:71), meaning that they are allies, supporters, and partners of one another.
Furthermore, the Quran explicitly states that in the Hereafter, the status of men and women is equal. The actions that qualify a man for Paradise are the same ones that render a woman equally deserving.
