Nature’s Universal Law
Several verses in the Quran may appear to address men specifically, but in their broader application, they relate to both men and women. For example, the Quran states that God created human beings into a life of toil and trial. (90:4) While the word “man” is used, it encompasses both genders. This indicates that both men and women are placed in a world where they must face challenges. The verse emphasizes Allah’s creative plan and shows that the structure of the world is designed so that both men and women must endure certain levels of struggle. Life is, in essence, a continuous process of striving. Neither a woman nor a man can escape this reality.
In practice, life is filled with challenges, and problem-solving is a natural and unavoidable part of it. When a man and a woman come together to start married life, they inevitably face challenges. A marriage without problems does not exist in this world. So, what is the solution to these challenges? The answer is simple: adjustment.
When someone tries to accommodate another person, it may seem that they are merely giving way to someone no different from themselves. This may lead them to think: “Why should I adjust to someone who is just like me? Why should I give in to another person?” Such thoughts can become barriers to developing harmony in the relationship.
This is a misunderstanding. When a person adjusts to another, he or she is not merely accommodating a man or a woman; in a deeper sense, the person is accepting the order established by the Creator. It is God Himself who has created a social system in which no collective endeavour can succeed without accommodation and cooperation. To adjust, therefore, is to accept the way God has designed human life. Seen in this light, adjustment becomes an act worthy of divine reward. It is not merely a moral practice or a one-sided concession; it is an act of worship and an acknowledgement of God’s sovereignty. Adjustment is, in this sense, a duty owed to God, and it should be practised with this awareness.
