Parents as Natural Teachers
Parents are the natural teachers of their children. The Quran and Hadith emphasize the importance of honouring one’s parents. The Quran instructs: “If either or both of them attain old age with you, say no word of contempt to them and do not rebuke them, but always speak gently to them, and treat them with humility and tenderness and say, ‘Lord, be merciful to them both, as they raised me up when I was little.’” (17:23-24)
This is a serious matter. Parents are the best supporters of their children, and no one can provide guidance as consistently and lovingly as they do. Therefore, Islam encourages creating an environment where children respect and value the advice of their parents.
Respect and honour for parents ensure that their advice is received with sincerity and understanding. Every child is inexperienced in their early years, whereas parents are seasoned guardians. This is why parents serve as the best teachers and mentors for their children, and their love further strengthens this bond.
The most natural and effective solution to challenges in married life is for young men and women to seek guidance from their parents regarding marriage. The parents have already experienced marriage and can guide the young couple regarding marriage. In this way, parents act as the best advisors—they are genuinely concerned for their children’s well-being and possess firsthand knowledge about the matters on which they are advising. However, parents can fulfill this role effectively only if their guidance is based not just on affection but on realistic, experience-based insights.
