Man finds himself in a world where there is a creation, but the Creator of this creation is apparently not in sight. There is design in this world, but apparently there is no visible designer. The entire universe functions like a great industry, but the engineer of this industry is nowhere to be seen. The prophets came to the world to answer these very questions. Prophets have told man that there exists an invisible, intangible being behind this visible, tangible creation; that this invisible being is God. The role of the prophets in one sense was to provide arguments to help people discover God.

The discovery of God takes place when one discovers one’s helplessness. Man discovers his total helplessness as compared to the all-powerfulness of Almighty God. In this way, he achieves the realisation of God. It has been aptly described in these words attributed to the fourth caliph Ali: “I discovered my Lord by the shattering of my ambitions.”

The discovery of God brings an intellectual and spiritual explosion. Such a discovery of God as revolutionizes one’s personality is called maarifah in the language of religion, while in secular language it may be termed spirituality. The Quran tells us that man was created so that he might worship God. In the words of the Quran, “I created the Jinn and mankind only so that they might worship Me.” (51:56). In this verse, the worship of God means the discovery and realisation of God. Such a discovery is, without doubt, the highest destination of anyone’s intellectual progress.

No, all scientists are not atheists. Professor Carl Troll (1899-1975) was President of the International Geographical Union from 1960 to 1964. He once remarked:

“The fruit of my life as a scientist and geographer is to become more deeply grateful to our Creator.”

When a scientist studies the world, an immense awareness of its wonders wells up inside him. If he acknowledges the world’s Creator, as Professor Troll did, his inner self expresses gratitude to that Being who brought such a meaningful universe into existence. Some people wrongly think that scientific truths and religious truths are mutually contradictory. It is simply not true. The findings of modern science have automatically accepted all claims of religious truths. Many scientists are devout believers in the Creator, God Almighty, finding enough evidence for God in the findings of modern science. Scientists were not responsible for forming the mindset of denying God in the modern era. Instead, it was some atheistic philosophers who misrepresented scientific discoveries, thereby, creating a self-constructed meaning of atheism. This led to some deniers of God among the philosophers who wrongly interpreted modern scientific discoveries to imply the non-existence of God, even though these discoveries, when rightly interpreted, actually pointed in the opposite direction—to God’s existence. Scientific discoveries more accurately pointed towards the affirmation of God. When scientists study nature, a profound sense of its greatness emerges within them. Their inner being bows before the entity that created such a meaningful universe.

Yes, scientific evidence of the post-Einstein era supports the existence of God. A reason why people deny the existence of God is that He is invisible; he cannot be seen. God’s being invisible is not a sufficient reason to deny His existence in this age of modern scientific age. In the post-Einstein era, when the atom was split, and the river of knowledge reached the micro-world, which was in the unseen, it was learned that everything was invisible. Things previously regarded as visible—atoms—all became invisible—sub-atomic particles that cannot be seen. In such a situation, denying the existence of God based on invisibility has become an unscientific stand. For details on this subject, studying these two books is recommended: 1. The Unseen World, by Sir Arthur Eddington and 2. Human Knowledge, by A. W. Bertrand Russel.

Present-day science accepts the existence of many things that cannot be seen, such as electrons, the law of gravity, X-rays, etc. Although they cannot be observed by the human eye directly, every scientist believes in their existence for the simple reason that although we cannot see these things directly, we can see their effects—for example, the heat of an electron, a falling apple, in the case of gravity, and a photo film, in the case of X-rays. From the scientific point of view, we believe in the existence of things, both by direct observation and their effects or, in other words, by way of indirect knowledge or inferential argument.

If everything in this universe is proved through indirect evidence, then the same is true for God’s existence. God certainly is not visible to our eyes. But He is undoubtedly observable through His signs—His creation in the form of the universe around us. So, we can say that the presence of the creation is proof of the Creator. This is scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God. The Creator, God Almighty is indirectly discoverable through reflection and contemplation on His creation. We cannot see God directly, but we can infer His existence by observing his effects—His creation or the universe.

The God-oriented life begins with the discovery of God. When individuals, whether men or women, discover God, it means they have found the truth. And this truth pervades their whole being. This feeling of having discovered the truth becomes such a thrilling experience that it fills them with everlasting conviction, removing all frustrations from their lives. Therefore, losses are no longer such a problem; for, in spite of them, they never lose the feeling that their greatest asset, i.e. God, is still with them.

Man experiences this realization by pondering upon God's creations. The truth is that the universe is an expression of God’s attributes. In this respect, the universe is a complete introduction to God. God is visible in His creations, just as a human being sees his own reflection in the mirror, without having any doubts about it.

The vastness of space tells man that God, its Creator, is boundless. The observation of the sun and the stars shows us that God is all light. The heights of the mountains show us the greatness of God. The waves of the sea and the flow of the river tell us that God is a storehouse of boundless blessings. We see God’s bounties in the greenery of the trees. Man’s existence becomes a proof of God's existence. In the waft of air he experiences a divine touch. In the chirping of the birds, he hears God’s songs.

The God-oriented life for man starts by his remembering God. He begins to feel the presence of God. Everything serves to remind him of God. God's remembrance is never absent from his heart and mind. His mornings and evenings are spent as if he is living in God’s neighbourhood. Just as rain replenishes the crops, so does he remain ever immersed in the remembrance of God.

In the matter of the existence of God, the modern mind is in grave confusion. As we find from this article written by Paul Davies. The atheist philosophers and physicists have frequently asked, “If God created the universe, who created God?” But this question is totally illogical. It is sheer negation of logic. Furthermore, this objection is based on a clear contradiction. Those who believe in a universe without a Creator are not ready to believe in a Creator without a Creator. If the universe can exist without a Creator, the existence of a Creator is also possible without Him being created.

It is an established fact that there is order in the universe in an absolutely perfect sense. This order is apparent to everyone’s observation. Paul Davies says, “the universe seems just right for life.” To support this statement, he has given a scientific example of the atom’s structure. What has been stated by Mr Davies with reference to atomic structure holds true also for the macroworld. Each part of this world, big or small, is so balanced, ordered and proportionate that even the minutest change in its structure could disturb the entire system of nature. This phenomenon of the universe provides conclusive proof of God’s existence. Intelligent design is clearly proof of an intelligent Creator. Logically, it is unthinkable that intelligent action should exist without an intelligent Creator.
