TRUE COMPANIONSHIP

It is widely understood that the esteemed status of the Companions of the Prophet in Islam was due to their close association with the Prophet. This point is, in itself, correct. However, it does not mean that companionship is some mysterious phenomenon, and that the Companions, through mere presence, automatically gained benefit from some unexplained effect. From a scholarly point of view, this explanation is not satisfactory, because it does not fully account for the facts. For example, it fails to explain why hundreds of other people in Madinah, who outwardly professed faith and repeatedly sat in the Prophet’s company, derived no benefit from it and came to be known in Islamic history as hypocrites.

The truth is that there is only one way for a person to achieve a high level of faith—and that is marifah, or intellectual growth. After embracing faith, a process of reflection begins within the individual. It is this thinking process that, in reality, is the only path for a believer to reach higher stages of faith.

This very process of reflection used to continue in the company of the Prophet. People would listen to his words and absorb them in a way that stirred their minds. In this way, a continuous process of reflection would occur within them, morning and evening. The companionship of the Prophet was a means to this reflective process, and for that reason, it came to be called the companionship of the Prophet.

However, simply listening to the Prophet’s words was not enough. His words only helped those who were receptive, who listened attentively, and could accept what was said without psychological barriers. This quality of receptivity was fully present in sincere believers, so they gained benefit from the Prophet’s companionship. The hypocrites lacked this receptivity, so they did not benefit from being in his company, despite sitting with him.

The common definition of a Companion is:

“Whoever saw the Prophet in a state of faith and died in that state is a Companion.”

This definition is incomplete. In reality, to understand the meaning of companionship, one must look at how it was practically expressed during the Prophet’s time. It was not the case that the Prophet sat silently while the Companions, after accepting faith, also sat quietly, just gazing at him. His companionship was always full of reflection and thought. In Quranic terms, it was a gathering in which wisdom was taught.

Historical accounts show, on the contrary, that companionship with the Prophet was a living and active experience.  He would speak about the blessings of his Lord (Quran 93:11). He would inform those present about the divine provisions granted to him (Quran 20:131). He would explain the verses of the Quran. He would answer people’s questions. He would say things that transformed doubt into certainty. He would teach words of remembrance, prayer, and gratitude. He would recite newly revealed parts of the Quran. He would narrate the deeply moving stories of previous prophets and past believers, and so on.

Those who sat in the company of the Prophet would hear deeply inspiring words. His presence nurtured intellectual awakening, and his companionship, in the truest sense, was a living companionship. This life-giving nature of his companionship was the true reason why the believing contemporaries of the Prophet were given such high status and came to be known in history as the Companions of the Prophet. This was an event of intellectual transformation, not merely passive sitting in a gathering.

The same is true for scholars and elders in later times. There is no mysterious power in anyone’s company. The benefit of companionship depends entirely on how receptive those who listen are. Those who are receptive will gain benefit, and those who aren’t will remain deprived.

Given this explanation, a more precise definition of a Companion would be:

“One who saw the Prophet in a state of faith, benefited from his companionship, and died in that state is a Companion.”
