THE EXAMPLE OF PAIRS
In the Quran, it is stated: “and We created pairs of all things so that you might reflect.” (51:49) This verse highlights an observable aspect of the world today, encouraging people to reflect and learn a lesson from it. The Quran refers to this phenomenon using the word “pairs” (zaujain). Commentators in earlier times have explained the term pairs in various ways. All these interpretations provide valuable insight. However, when we analyze this verse in light of modern scientific discoveries, it offers a renewed sense of certainty.
According to the Quran, it acts as a reason for strengthening one’s faith (48:4). Modern research has shown that the principle of pairing, which we observe in humans, also applies to everything in the universe. Nothing is complete on its own; it becomes complete only when combined with its pair.
In the material world, for example, atoms contain both negative and positive particles. In plants, the principle of pairing appears as male and female parts. One is called the staminate flower (male flower), and the other is the pistillate flower (female flower). The same pattern is observed in animals—each species exists in pairs: the male (he, male) and the female (she, female). Similarly, humans also come in pairs, known as man and woman.
If we consider this general principle of pairing, one exception stands out: the human world. Despite its activity and progress, it remains incomplete. To become whole, it needs a counterpart—a pair. However, this pair is absent in the current world. Experience shows that today’s world is driven by self-interest. Most relationships are centered around personal gain. Yet, human beings naturally long for a principled and ideal world. Due to limited resources and individual freedom of choice, creating such a world here is impossible. This shortcoming suggests that the current world must have a pair that completes it. Since this world is based on self-interest, its counterpart must be a world founded on values. Only a value-based world can fill what is missing and bring completeness. That complete world is the Hereafter.
In the Hereafter, God has created Paradise—a world free from all imperfections and limitations. It is a world without fear or sorrow, where every condition necessary for complete fulfillment and eternal peace is present. In this worldly life, everything exists in pairs—except for one thing-the pair of this world. This singular exception strongly suggests that its missing counterpart must exist, pointing toward a higher reality beyond this life. The pairs of everything else are visible in this world, but for the purpose of testing human beings, the pair of the human world has been kept in the unseen world. After death, all people will enter that next world—and there, they will find their missing pair in reality. The topic of divine reflection is a vast one, with many aspects. Here, only a few examples are shared to clarify the concept. The author has discussed other aspects of this subject in his other books, where further details can be found.
