The realization that one is accountable to God is of basic importance. If one doesn’t realize this, even if he were told a thousand things, he wouldn’t accept anything. He would stay the same. The secret to transformation is that one must have the sense of accountability. People usually think that if they offer five obligatory prayers, they have nothing else to do. This is a false understanding of Islam. Everything in life is connected to Islam. How you speak, how you sit, how you behave, each of this is related to Islam.
There is no other option except to have a deep sense of accountability. The more your sense of accountability increases, the less negative thoughts you will have. When the Prophet addressed people, many in the gathering would start speaking amongst one another. The Quran revealed that this behaviour was wrong. Traditions say that this made the companions very quiet, almost as if birds were sitting on their heads. If they spoke, the bird would fly away. Just one verse of the Quran changed them so considerably that they became totally quiet. Many a times people would stand outside the Prophet's house and say: يا محمد اخرج الينا (Muhammad, come outside we want to meet you. (Al-Tabaqat al-Kubra, v. 2, p. 161) The Quran commented that this was extremely uncivilized behaviour.
