A Believer Doesn’t Taunt Nor Curse Others

According to a hadith, 'a believer does not taunt others nor does he call down curses on them.' If you reflect on this, you will realize that a believer is a person who fears God. Fear of God places control on his tongue. There are speed breakers on the road to check the speed. If there were no speed breakers, people would drive uncontrollably without stopping at all. A speed breaker slows down the car. Just as the speed breaker places checks on the speed, fear of God places checks on a person. It prevents him from using his tongue without control.

According to a hadith: لَيْسَ الْمُؤْمِنُ بِالطَّعَّانِ وَلاَ اللَّعَّانِ. "A believer does not taunt people nor does he curse them." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1977) A believer does not taunt others nor does he call down curses on them. If you reflect on this, you will realize that a believer is a person who fears God. Fear of God places checks on a person's tongue. As a consequence, he becomes very just when dealing with others. He looks at people justly. He does not say anything against justice, as that would make him accountable to God.

The Quran says: وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى "Do not let your enmity for others turn you away from justice. Deal justly; that is nearer to being God-fearing." (5:8) You should be just even at times of enmity. A person who fears God will be just in spite of enmity or friendship; he will not speak unjustly. Such a person will never taunt others nor curse them. He will never abuse nor indulge in slander. Behind all this are fear of God, the sense of accountability, and awareness of Day of Judgment. All this places control on a person's tongue. They prevent him from uttering wrong, taunting, cursing, using abusive language or doing backbiting. A person who fears God refrains from all of this.
