What Will Help You in the Hereafter

When a person is born in this world, he has an upright nature. When he lives in this world, different circumstances, temptations and experiences tend to spoil his original personality. For example, a person develops negative thinking and sometimes seeks revenge. He tries to harm others to acquire good fortune for himself. He begins to harbour hatred and even resorts to violence. All these attributes did not exist in the heart he was born with. We have to save ourselves from these additions.

Surah al-Shura of the Quran speaks about the Hereafter: يَوْمَ لَا يَنْفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ، إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ  (26:88-89) The Day when wealth and sons will be of no avail, and when he alone will be saved who comes to God with a sound heart. In this world, many things that lie outside ourselves are of help to us. For example, wealth is separate from us. Wealth helps us to live in this world. But the Hereafter is very different from this. Nothing outside yourself will help you, neither wealth nor children. The only thing that will count is what a person has himself brought. The Quran speaks of a sound heart. This means a purified personality. This is a person who reaches the Hereafter with a purified heart, a purified soul and a purified mind. When a person is born in this world, he has an upright nature. كُلُّ مَوْلُودٍ يُولَدُ عَلَى الفِطْرَةِ (Sahih al-Bukhari 1385) When he lives in this world, different circumstances, temptations and experiences tend to spoil his original personality. For example, a person develops negative thinking and sometimes seeks revenge. He tries to harm others to acquire good fortune for himself. He begins to harbour hatred and even resorts to violence.
