What is the True Meaning of Reward?

When you perform a deed, your personality develops alongside it. The personality that forms is what you may call reward, or tazkiya (purification); it amounts to the same thing. I do not believe that reward is stored in a bank to be received later. It is given to you then and there, and you can feel it. Imagine, for instance, that I did something wrong that made you upset, yet you chose to forgive me, you responded as Hazrat Abu Ayub Ansari did, you’ll experience an incredible sense of peace, calm, and divine tranquility within. That is the true reward, the real personality development, the essence of tazkiya.
