The True Believer is Like a Gentle Plant

A true believer is like a gentle plant. The plant doesn’t clash with the breeze. It isn't stubborn. It bends instead. This is modesty or submission. The world in which we are, we have to live in a society. We have to deal with people repeatedly. What do you have to do? You have to live with modesty and submission. You should have the ability to bend or bow down. You must not have a stubborn character.

In space there are innumerable stars, the solar system and galaxies. All are revolving. The countless stars are all rotating. None is stationary. But there is no clash among these celestial objects. Cars travel on our roads. There are accidents everyday. Cars breakdown and people die. Space is so expansive with countless stars in motion. But there's no clash between stars. What is a galaxy? Galaxy is a collection of millions or billions of stars. All these stars are in motion. I once read that often a galaxy in motion enters another galaxy, and then it moves past it! One galaxy enters another and without any confrontation, it exits and moves away.

This is indeed unique. The Quran refers to this as: كُلٌّ فِي فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ (21:33) All the bodies in space are moving in their respective orbits. No object enters the orbit of another. Each moves in its own orbit. There is no trespassing and no clash. What is this? This indicates that humans should also carry out their activities without confrontation. Just as in the vast universe objects are moving without any clash, humans must also carry out their activities without clash. This is an example from space that shows what kind of activities don’t create problems for others. Humans have to follow this example.

The Prophet of Islam was once in an open area. There he saw a gentle plant. When there was breeze, the plant bent in the direction of the wind. When the breeze stopped, the plant stood upright. The Prophet said: مَثَلُ المُؤْمِنِ كَمَثَلِ الخَامَةِ مِنَ الزَّرْعِ (Sahih al-Bukhari 5644) A true believer is like a gentle plant.
