There are two kinds of people. First, those who believe they know it all. Second, those who think they know nothing. One who lives as a seeker, who wants to know, who feels he doesn’t know, will quickly accept what is told. If a person has the feeling that he knows everything, he won't be able to receive anything. It is completely true that arrogance is the root of all evil, while modesty is the root of all goodness.
The container within a person's heart and mind should be receptive. What is receptivity? The greatest receptivity is modesty. Modesty is the other name of receptivity. Where there is modesty, there is receptivity. If you are arrogant, your container is already filled to the brim. What does arrogance mean? I know everything, I am an all-knowing person. An arrogant person lives with the thought that he knows everything. Once I went to a village outside Delhi. I stayed at someone's house for a day. The children of the house would come to me but I couldn’t teach them anything. Because the children's guardian was a unique person. He had taught his children that when someone said anything to them, them must say: We already know. They would speak in their colloquial tongue. We know it all! We know everything! Don’t ever say, We don’t know. This was their unique mindset. He taught his children: Don’t show before anyone that you don’t know. Show that you know everything. When I would ask something, they would say we know everything.
As a result, I stayed there and couldn’t impart anything to the children. They were not in a position to take anything. Their containers were already full. Nothing else could be poured from outside. If a container is already full, how can you add anything to it? There are two kinds of people. First, those who believe they know it all. Second, those who think they know nothing. One who lives as a seeker, who wants to know, who feels he doesn’t know, will quickly accept what is told. If a person has the feeling that he knows everything, he won't be able to receive anything.
