The Spirit of Hajj

Living a life free from quarrels and arguments is the training imparted during Hajj. When a pilgrim returns home, he should come back fully trained. They should return home trained to live their lives without quarrelling. No anger, no intolerance, no quarreling. They should take this training from Hajj. That behaviour should be visible in their lives, in their homes, and in the surrounding society. But nothing like this happens, nothing at all. There is a saying goes: "Old habits are hard to break." So, there is no difference visible between the pre-Hajj and post-Hajj periods. "It is because people perform Hajj in terms of form. They believe that Hajj means completing the rituals.

Every year, so many people go for Hajj. There is always a crowd of pilgrims. Does any change occur in society when they return to society? We hear a lot of so many people going for Hajj, but the question is, when they come back, to their homes, to society, what change do you see there? Nothing at all, life remains the same as it was before. For example, it is said in the Quranفَلَا رَفَثَ وَلَا فُسُوقَ وَلَا جِدَالَ فِي الْحَجِّ “One must abstain from indecent speech, from all wicked conduct, and from quarrelling while on the pilgrimage." (2:197) That is, during the time of Hajj, there should be no obscenity, no wickedness, and no quarrelling. Thus living a life free from quarrels and arguments is the training imparted during Hajj.
