Umar Faruq had said: اميتوا الباطل بالصمت عنه (Hilyatul Awliya, v. 1, p. 55) This is a very important advice. In other words, it means: Solve the problem of enmity by ignoring it. Solve the problem of enmity by avoidance, by ignoring it. This is a very simple formula. If you seek to put an end to enmity yourself, you will clash and confront, you will have to spend money and so on. But if you ignore, the issue will be resolved within seconds.
A believer is a man of God. His behaviour is decided on unilateral basis, and not on bilateral basis. The hadith says: Don’t become imma'a. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2007) Imma'a means I will behave as the other person behaves with me. If he speaks badly, I will also speak badly. If he speaks nicely, I too will speak nicely. This is forming relations on bilateral basis. This method goes against divine ethics. Divine ethics are not formed on bilateral basis. They are formed on unilateral basis. Irrespective of what people do, I will follow my principles. This is no simple matter. Why are we in this world? We have come to gain intellectual and spiritual development. We have come to qualify ourselves for Paradise. This aim will make us 100% positive. Otherwise what will happen? We have very little time in life. This time we will give to others. We will lose our share in it. The only way is to adopt the policy of avoidance. We have to avoid.
