If there is pride, how can one discover God? If you have pride, you cannot reach God. One who wants to discover God has to decide to lead a simple life. No person can have an experience of helplessness without simplicity. If he doesn’t experience helplessness, he won't even connect with God.
For discovery of God, simplicity is very important. It is impossible to have a realization of God in a state of luxury. A person discovers God in a state of helplessness. Simplicity brings helplessness. Where there is luxury, there cannot be an experience of helplessness. Hazarat Umar Faruq ruled over a large empire. He used to travel on a camel. He went to Palestine on camelback. People asked him to travel on a horse instead. They brought a horse for him and made Umar mount it. The horse was very fine. But Umar dismounted it after a while. He said sitting on the horse he felt pride enter his soul. (Futuh al-Sham, al-Waqidi, 1:231)
