Why the Prophet Didn’t Choose Violence

The peaceful method is always workable. Whenever you want and wherever you be, if you follow the peaceful method, no one will stop you. But when you adopt the violent method, indulge in suicide bombing, pick up guns and explode bombs, try to achieve your aims by fighting, the other side will react. They would not sit quietly. They will use all their strength. If you throw stones, they will retaliate with bombs. How is it possible that the other side would remain passive? If you fire bullets from land, they will drop bombs from the air. So, the way of fighting is difficult, meaning it creates problems.

The model set by the Prophet is: وَالصُّلْحُ خَيْرٌ(4.128) There are many other traditions. Hazarat Ayesha says about the Prophet: مَا خُيِّرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنَ أَمْرَيْنِ قَطُّ إِلَّا أَخَذَ أَيْسَرَهُمَا (Sahih al-Bukhari 4785) This also tells us about the model set by the Prophet. It tells us about the example set by the Prophet. This tradition has appeared in different chapters in Bukhari. Hazarat Ayesha says that whenever the Prophet had to choose one option from among two options, he would take the easier choice, not the difficult one. What is the meaning of easy and difficult here? Don't take them in the simple sense. This can be understood as workable option and unworkable option. The Prophet would not be an absolute idealist in any situation. These days people have an ideal in mind with which they plunge into action.

This was not the prophetic method. He would not take action based on an ideal in his mind. He would always see what was possible and what was workable. The meaning of this hadith in today's words is that there are two methods: peaceful method and violent method. The above hadith will then mean that the Prophet always adopted the peaceful method. He would abandon the confrontational method. The Prophet would never take the method that involved confrontation, violence and fighting with others. This approach helped him gain great success.
