What Qualities Does Namaz Inculcate in You?

Allahu Akbar means God is great. You start your day by acknowledging the greatness of your Creator. The Being who gave you birth and created you. He is the Sustainer and Giver. This is why, you proclaim Allahu Akbar, or "God is great!" But there is something else implicit in this. What is that? God is great and I am not great.

What is wazu or ablutions? After doing wazu, the Prophet prayed: اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ، وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 55) O God, make me among those who are purified. During ablutions you wash your hands, face and feet. You washed with water, but this is a symbol of internal purification. You washed some parts of your body, but your feelings should be the same as that of the Prophet's. O God, I have purified my body with water. You purify my heart and mind, my soul and my inner personality. This is indeed a great prayer. This is the beginning of your day. You begin your day as a purified soul. You offer the Fajr prayer before sunrise.Namaz, or prayer, is a complete form of worship. I will make two points here. The beginning of Namaz is with Allahu Akbar. When you say Allahu Akbar, you acknowledge the greatness of God.

When you proclaim the greatness of God, you also acknowledge that 'I am not great' This is a lesson in modesty. Namaz gives you a dose in modesty. You bow down and place your head on the ground in prostration. All this is modesty. Namaz inclucates a spirit in you. There are two aspects to this spirit.  What is the first aspect? It is modesty, which you receive from Allahu Akbar. God is great and I am not great. One aspect of the spirit of Namaz is modesty. Modesty is the greatest virtue. No virtue is greater than modesty. All virtues or values and all good things are linked to modesty. You end Namaz by saying, Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah, Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah. While saying this you turn your face to the right and to the left. What is the meaning of this? You address all the people of the globe and all of humanity. O people, my brothers and sisters, may peace be upon you all! Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah means 'may peace be upon you'. With respect to God, you have to acknowledge His greatness. With respect to human beings, you should live as a peaceful member of society. You should have peace in your heart for all.
