I believe modesty is a sign. But it should be true modesty, not fake modesty. A person went to ask a question to a big scholar. The scholar replied, I don’t know anything. When the man said, yes you know nothing, the scholar became angry. He himself said, I don’t know anything. But when another person said to him, yes you know nothing, he became angry. Many people believe modesty is to wear certain kind of clothes and to speak a certain way. This is baseless and has nothing to do with modesty. The sign of true modesty is when you don’t feel happy when praised nor get offended at criticism. You don’t feel happy when praised. Modesty comes when you discover the greatness of God. If you truly discover God's greatness, you will feel you are nothing. You won't consider yourself worthy of praise. When you are criticized, you will say, I am indeed valueless. A modest person will consider himself valueless. He may have value before God, but in his own eyes he has no value. The sign of true modesty is that you have surrendered before God. This is true modesty, not fake modesty. The culture of fake modesty is prevalent. Fake modesty is common in today's culture. But it is nothing at all. True modesty is everything.
