A poet had composed a rhyme in which he called the Prophet, Muzammam Muzammam means a condemned person. They used to address the Prophet as Muzammam and say we condemn you. (Musnad al-Humaidi 325) They had kept the Prophet's name Muzammam, although his name was Muhammad. Muhammad means praiseworthy. The Prophet said their abuses, ridicule and satire is directed at Muzammam. They have coined a name Muzammam and are heaping abuses at Muzammam, but my name is Muhammad. This was a beautiful way of avoidance.
There are incidents happening these days at which Muslims get provoked, seek punishment and kill people. All of these incidents happened in the lifetime of the Prophet. But the Prophet remained patient at people's behaviour and prayed for their guidance. The statements made in earlier times were composed in the form of poetry.
The Prophet would say that it was a big blessing of God. Their abuses are not being directed at me. They apply to another character whom they have supposed themselves. You all know how people troubled the Prophet at Taif. They threw stones at the Prophet and he even started bleeding. At that time when the angel of mountains came and said that God has seen their behaviour. If you direct me, I will instantly crush all these people. Taif was surrounded by mountains. But the Prophet said: I hope that their next generation would worship God the One. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3231)
Every moment the Prophet used to pray for people's guidance. People's hearts are in God's hands. Whenever God wants, He can turn around people's hearts and guide them. Our behaviour should be such that it softens the hearts of people. We have to speak kindly and not react or retaliate against them. This is the example of the Prophet.
