Prayers always do 50% of the work. Prayers will not do 100% of the work. If you engage yourself in self-intrsopection and searching for your mistakes, and try to correct yourself, then you will seek God's help to be more successful in the task. It is not possible to make no efforts on your part and keep praying to God. Your prayers won't be accepted even if you pray for a thousand years. The Quran says: إِلَيْهِ يَصْعَدُ الْكَلِمُ الطَّيِّبُ وَالْعَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ يَرْفَعُهُ (35:10) One is pray and the other is to make efforts. Both have a 50-50 role. If a person does something will complete seriousness, and feels that his efforts are not enough, he needs God's help, then he will pray to God. When a person does 50% of the work from his side, then he prays to God to complete the rest 50% of the work. If a person does not play 50% of his role, then there is no sense in praying. Such an insincere prayer will not be accepted by God.m
There are many prophetic prayers mentioned in books of Hadith. A very basic prayer has these words:
اللَّهُمَّ أَرِنَا الْحَقَّ حَقًّا، وَارْزُقْنَا اتّباعه، وأرنا الباطل باطلا، وارزقنا اجتنابه (Tafsir ibn Kathir, v. 1, p. 427)
اللهم أَرِنَا الْأَشْيَاءَ كَمَا هِيَ (Tafsir al-Razi, v. 1, p. 119)
This means: O God, show us the truth as the truth and show us falsehood as falsehood. Show us things as they are. This means that in this world a person develops preoccupied or biased thinking. A person become conditioned to see things as he wants. Often he sees the truth in a wrong way and begins to see falsehood as the truth. The Prophet prayed: O God save us from looking at things in a biased way, or looking at things from our mindset, although the reality is different from what we think. Let us see things as they are. You can call this objective thinking in present-day language. In other words, God save us from subjective thinking and give rise to objective thinking or as it is thinking in our minds.
