A person from a tribe read a certain poem before the Prophet. He glorified his tribe and his culture. The Prophet then called for Hassan. Hassan was a Companion of the Prophet and a poet. The Prophet called him and asked him to respond. Hassan was not present there. He came and was then asked to reply. Hassan responded to the poem with a poem. (al-Istiab fi Marifat al-Ashab, 1:342) The other person had glorified his culture in poetry. Hassan also spoke about Islam in return. This is the method of Islam. The early Muslims took criticism as an intellectual challenge. They would not respond by abusing the other person. Islam does not consider abuse as criticism. It is very wrong to consider criticism as abuse. If he is criticizing, then he is saying something important. You should analyze his viewpoint and his argument. If someone presents an argument, then give a counter-argument. Whenever a person says anything against Islam or the Prophet, that is an intellectual challenge. How is an intellectual challenge countered? If someone uses words, you also use words in return. If he uses the pen, you also use the pen. If he publishes a book, you too publish a book. That is the right way to meet any kind of intellectual challenge. This is the Islamic method. It has become famous about Islam that if someone speaks against the Prophet, then he should be killed. Many fatwas have been issued to kill such a person. Some people published books which spoke against the Prophet. Fatwas were issued asking Muslims to kill such people wherever they were found. This is the age of media. In the previous age when anything was said, only the local people came to know about it. Now in the age of media, everyone comes to know about it. When such fatwas are issued, the whole world comes to know through radio, newspapers, books and other means. Now within minutes and seconds, news reach every corner of the world. This formed the image that Islam is a violent religion. Islam has no tolerance. Islam is intolerant. This is the image developed about Islam in the entire world. This image is a result of Muslims' mistake. Islam does not teach this. You have to judge Muslims by the Islamic teachings. You have to differentiate between Islam and Muslims. You have to differentiate between Islam and Muslims. You have to judge Muslims in the light of Islamic teachings and not vice versa.  If Muslims do anything, that is Muslims' own actions. It is not related to Islam.
