Prophetic traditions serve as gems of wisdom for mankind. Maulana Wahiduddin Khan extracted wisdom from the traditions in his books that serve as a beacon of light for those seeking to develop intellectually and live a purposeful life.
Prophet Muhammad (570-632 AD) was born in the full light of history. The Quran calls him ‘a mercy to all mankind’ (21:107). Whoever seeks a guide for himself cannot fail to see him, for he stands out like a tower, a mountain on the horizon, radiating light like a beacon, beckoning man to the true path. One of the qualities of the Prophet of Islam was his great vision, as a result of which he urged his followers to adopt a wise approach in all their dealings. Several traditions on this subject have appeared in the books of Hadith. For instance, the Prophet observed: “We must not feel envy except for two kinds of people: those who, when given wealth, spend generously in the path of Truth, and those who, when given wisdom, judge accordingly and shed its light upon others. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 73) A large number of traditions have been recorded which underscore the importance of wisdom. For instance, the Prophet of Islam said: “How good is the gathering at which wise sayings are uttered? Similarly, he said: “There is no better gift than words of wisdom.” (Sunan al-Darimi, Hadith No. 295)
