The literal meaning of Islam is submission, that is, submission to God’s will. Submission is the name of that natural response, which is expressed by human beings after they realize God. Islam is a religion of peace. It does not sanction violence. The word ‘Islam,’ from the Arabic silm, means ‘peace’. One of the attributes of God mentioned in the Quran (59:23) is As-Salam, which means ‘peace and security.’ According to a tradition of the Prophet, ‘It is part of faith to spread peace to the world.’ (Musnad al-Bazzar, Hadith no. 1396) In other words, peace is a prerequisite of Islam. It describes reconciliation as the best policy (Quran, 4:128) and states that God abhors any disturbance of peace (Quran, 2:205). The Quran (5:16) likens divine guidance to the paths of peace. Paradise, the ideal human abode, is called the ‘Home of Peace’ (Quran, 10:25).
