The Message of Fasting

What is the true spirit of fasting? It is to eat and drink only as much as necessary, and to leave aside everything else. For a true fasting person, his entire routine is disrupted. There's a complete overhaul in his life.  So what does that mean? Eating and drinking become bare necessities, and everything else is relegated to secondary status. Comfort, norms, routine, habits—everything is made secondary. The lesson of fasting is to prioritize truth over everything else and consider everything else secondary. Except God, regard everything else as secondary.

People haven't truly learned the real lesson of fasting. During fasting, a person lives on bare necessities. I'm talking about true fast here. Nowadays, fasting has been turned into a celeberation by people. A gentleman was going to Makkah during Ramadan. He said that fasting holds great significance in Makkah. So, he is going there to celebrate the grandeur of fasting, it's like a festival of fasting. Is this really fasting?

What is the true spirit of fasting? It is to eat and drink only as much as necessary, and to leave aside everything else. For a true fasting person, his entire routine is disrupted. There's a complete overhaul in his life.  So what does that mean? Eating and drinking become bare necessities, and everything else is relegated to secondary status. Comfort, norms, routine, habits—everything is made secondary. The lesson of fasting is to prioritize truth over everything else and consider everything else secondary. Except God, regard everything else as secondary.

That is we need to take a few things as bare necessity, as per our need and to distance ourselves from other things. What is it? It's a lesson. It's a lesson to live life in such a way that, except what you truly need, make everything else secondary. Take it to the extent that you also consider that secondary, when someone says something to you and you take offense. When someone speaks against us, we feel upset that so-and-so said such things. If someone has raised a voice against us, we feel that so-and-so has raised a voice against us. So, we need to make all these things secondary. If someone shouts at us, let them shout; if someone publishes books against us, let them publish; if someone prints cartoons against us, let them print; if someone holds a rally against us, let them hold it. All of these are secondary to us. We need to remember God, focus on truth, prioritize the Hereafter. This is the message of fasting.
