In this world each piece of bad news is followed by good news. Each adverse incident gives man the good tidings that we should not fall a victim to frustration or lose heart. Rather we should muster enough courage to seek out new opportunities.
If we fail to establish peace, then we must face destruction in every field of life. The option for us is not between peace and no peace, but between peace and annihilation.
It takes courage to be patient as it requires a superior mental state.
By forgetting what is lost, one reorganizes one’s work on the basis of whatever one still possesses. Planning anew replaces getting frustrated and this makes it possible to set oneself to starting one’s life’s journey all over again.
To complain about things is a fruitless exercise. If one wants to complain, one is sure to find plenty to complain about in life. The wise way is to forget the unpleasant things which are a part and parcel of life, bury grudges, and carry on seeking to fulfill one’s true purpose in life.
The benefit of patience and tolerance is that, even after suffering losses, the bereft one does not lose his balance. In spite of temporary defeat, he never loses the ability to think cool-mindedly and is able to plan his life anew.
Although many allurements exist in this world, they are there to put man to the test. In avoidance of temptation man shows that he is a man of principles.
In moments of crisis, when the individual opts for the way of peace, he cultivates positive thinking. He raises his moral standards. Indeed, he gives proof of his being a human being.
Peace in this world is only for one who can be content in its absence.
Nothing can make the sun rise earlier, but everyone wants his life’s morning to rise sooner.
No seed turns into a tree by leaps and bounds. Similarly, it is not possible for a person to reach his destination without travelling for the requisite period of time.
It is the challenges in life that either make men or break them.
When one is prejudiced against something, one cannot see its rationality, even if there are clear signs in support of it.
What inspires a man more than anything is to have a great mission before him. That is what arouses man’s hidden potential. It makes him, in short, a peak performer.
The more we give, the, more we receive. And never can we hope to receive more than we have actually given.
Being spiritual means rectifying one's relationship with other human beings and it is far from meaning the renunciation of all contacts with the material world.
One sign of a principled person is his strictness with himself, and his tolerance towards others.
We tend to lose whatever is second best on account of just one reason, and that is, our futile pursuit of the very best.
Try, try by all means to achieve the very best, but when you feel that you can only get the second best then accept it gracefully.
When you suspect another person of some wrongdoing and you have no irrefutable evidence in support of your suspicion, then you are committing falsehood. In other words, you are telling a lie.
Being patient does not mean not taking any action. It means planning your strategy, assessing your resources and taking into consideration the relevant natural factors.
Men and animals both have experiences of different kinds each day and night, but the difference is that animals take them at face value and are unaware of the need to discover their deeper meaning. But man has the capacity for what is called "conceptual thought." Man can penetrate to the deeper aspect of things, and then learn from them hidden lessons. This difference is very important. Those who fail to take lessons from experience, be they men or women are reducing themselves to the level of animals.
Criticism based on facts is constructive, but making allegations without any basis in fact is the worst kind of crime.
If you want to say anything about anyone, first of all you have to substantiate what you want to say with logic. If you have good reason to speak, then you may open your mouth, otherwise you should remain silent.
It is a fact that the human mind is full of desires but, at the same time, it is also true that man's mind has the capacity for logical thought. When you find that your mind is overwhelmed by desire, examine that desire in the light of reality. Assess it in terms of its potential results, and find out objectively whether it is feasible or not to fulfil it. Then, after examining it completely, if you are satisfied that its results will be beneficial, fulfil your desire.
Knowledge is like a great ocean: faced with its immensity, no one can be a self-sufficient person. The process of seeking knowledge has to be a mutual venture, in the course of which everyone gains something from everyone else. Here the taker is the giver and the giver is the taker. Everyone plays both roles.
Money or material goods are only meant to fulfil man's needs. Money is not a goal in itself. Money can fulfil the physical requirements of man, but man is more than a physical entity. Man is an intellectual being, and as such can find fulfilment in pursuing some alternative goal which is higher than that of money.
To attain success, man has to take stimulus from his environment, both positive and negative, his education, whether good or bad, his moral and physical inheritance and ‘convert’ these into success in much the same way that a plant converts nutrients from the soil into fruits. Even from his failures, he has to extract such experience as will set him on a better and more successful course for the future.
If you try to convince all the members of society of your wish to prevail, you will seldom succeed, so practise the art of doing what is possible and leaving what is impossible. This is a sign of maturity. The mature person remains even-tempered in situations which are impossible for him to change.
Death is like an individual earthquake. Everyone is doomed to die, but no one knows when he is going to face this fateful moment. Death means complete detachment from the present world. It is like compulsory eviction from the world he has built for himself.
The character of those with double standards is not predictable. Such people talk much, but fail to back up their avowed resolutions with firmness of action. As a result, they will very soon lose the trust of their society.
The fact is that every man or woman is born with great potential. But this potential is in terms of innate capacity and not in terms of actuality. It is challenging circumstances that awaken people's minds and enable them to turn their potential into reality. In this world of competition, any success story is a story of struggle.
Psychological studies show that situations always being propitious kills the spirit of struggle. The history of progress tells us that no individual or nation has ever made progress in favorable conditions.
Consultation is not an isolated habit. The willingness to engage in it results directly from qualities like modesty, sincerity, caution and the spirit of learning. Without these qualities, no one can engage sincerely in consultation.
Conscience is the strongest check against wrongdoing. Anyone who wants to live on this planet as an honest person or as a man of character must keep a guard upon his conscience. Nothing else can guarantee one's personal morality.
Each time a person comes under the influence of an evil temptation, his conscience, or his moral sensitivity, becomes alive. It warns him almost instantly, emerging like a moral teacher. It persuades man not to succumb to wrong temptations and not to deviate from the right path. Anyone who listens to his inner voice is surely saved from becoming a victim of evil forces. But one who fails to pay heed to it will lose the opportunity to act righteously.
Purposeful people never allow themselves to be diverted from their objective.
No one puts out other people’s lamps. It is the lack of oil which puts them out.
In times of personal disaster do not become full of hate, pride and egoism.
We have to understand the scheme of things in this world and adjust ourselves accordingly
Cow indeed shows us what God requires of us in this world. We may take in ‘grass’; but we must give out ‘milk.’ Even when people wrong us, we are required to convert that wrong into a right. Even when we are beset by adversity, we are required to turn it to good account.
What is required from man is that when he is granted power he should not suffer from the psychology of pride and arrogance. And when man finds himself in a state of subjugation he should not fall prey to negative psychology.
If the recipient of a favour fails to acknowledge it for fear of belittling himself in the eyes of his benefactor, he does himself nothing but harm. It is more a question of being belittled in the eyes of his own conscience than falling down in others’ eyes – a course by far the more injurious.
The Prophet of Islam, once addressing his companions, said: “Should I not tell you what is good character?” They said, “Yes, certainly.” He replied: “You should join hands with him who cuts asunder from you. You should give to those who deprive you. You should forgive those who oppress you.”
One who does not differentiate between his own people and others is a man of principle. His is a contradiction-free personality. And this trait, when properly developed, will turn him into a perfect person, a person who has principled and unilateral ethics.
The great secret of life is realism, and there is no form of realism greater than
accepting defeat. To do so is to acknowledge the fact that, far from being
ahead of others, one is behind them. In other words, it is to know where one
stands in life.
No seed turns into a tree by leaps and bounds. Similarly, it is not possible for a person to reach his destination without travelling for the requisite period of time.
The wind carries away the scattered particles of sand, causing them to float all around. But when these particles of sand join together to make a mountain, no tempest is strong enough to shake them.
When two people are quarrelling, both are at fault; if one were in the right, he would have left the place where the quarrel started, and then it would have come to a stop by itself.
It is important to make preparations. Only after long years of hard struggle and perseverance is it possible for one to play this part successfully.
Every quality has both, a plus point and a minus point. A quality turns into a minus point when it becomes harmful to others.
What inspires a man more than anything is to have a great mission before him. That is what arouses a man’s hidden potential. It makes him, in short, a peak performer.
The more we give, the, more we receive. And never can we hope to receive more than we have actually given.
One who is spiritually inclined resorts constantly to his inner mental life – something which no one can take away from him. Such a man possesses inner contentment, and is far above all material gain and loss.
Being spiritual means rectifying one's relationship with other human beings and it is far from meaning the renunciation of all contacts with the material world.
Being spiritual means rectifying one's relationship with other human beings and it is far from meaning the renunciation of all contacts with the material world.
When a typhoon approaches, even the fishes dive deep. The confrontation of human strength with the enormous powers of nature is inane and futile.
No doubt there are apprehensions about taking risks. But in the present world nothing can be achieved without a certain amount of daring. As the proverb says, no risk no gain.
A believer is one who finds God. Such a person by his very nature becomes a simplicity-loving person. In his eyes pretensions lose their attraction.
When one is silent, one’s focus becomes oneself rather than extraneous matters. One eschews superficiality and engages with deeper realities.
Perseverance is a virtue which can be practised at all times, even by one who is crippled by a disease, and even by one who had failed to get a degree from a university.
For life as a whole, disparateness is actually a great blessing: the good points of one man may compensate for the shortcomings of another.
“When one’s ego is hurt,” says a contemporary psychologist, “it turns into super-ego, and the result is breakdown.”
In this competitive world, those who want concessions will always find themselves in the back seat. It is only those who make every effort to earn excellent qualifications will ever come to the fore.
A great disadvantage of an ungrateful attitude is that it produces a mentality of non-acknowledgement. Failing at first to acknowledge the favours of one’s fellow men leads one to failure to give wholehearted credence to the Lord of the Universe.
Sometimes by being hasty a man invites trouble, but then he always has the possibility of turning the situation to good account by adopting the ways of patience.
Those who seek to achieve high ideals, but do not wish to go through the tedium of doing extensive groundwork first, are building sandcastles that will not be able to stand the test of time.
No one is so powerful that he can harm others without harming himself.
Now, a peaceful course of action is not just one of the possibilities: it is the only feasible and result-oriented option.
Evil can have no beginning but from pride nor any end but from humility.
Success depends on the ability to convert unfavourable circumstances into favourable ones
Allowing emotion to govern one’s actions brings failure. Acting with restraint brings success.
Overcoming the enemy by power is half a victory, whereas overcoming the enemy by love is a complete victory.
Do not look at things from the point of view of personal desires and whims, but from the point of view of reality.
In matters of criticism or expression of differences, the right approach is for people to end unnecessary sensitivity to it instead of attempting to put an end to criticism and differences.
Living in worry or stopping your thinking process is not the solution. Instead of stopping your thinking process, enhance it and you will soon discover that the stress you felt was acting as an intellectual booster in your life.
There is only one true solution to the problem of stress and that is to adopt the correct attitude to stress – that of managing it instead of trying to eliminate it or reacting negatively to it.
It is man’s mind that differentiates him from the rest of creation, it can only be through the development of his mind that man can attain true spirituality.
Purposeful people never allow themselves to be diverted from their objective.
Each of our steps should be based on realities rather than on wishful thinking and vague suppositions.
To bear with controversy is a sign of knowledge.
Man’s true purpose in life can only be one which reflects the higher side of his personality.
Complaining about others is often an admission of one’s own incompetence.
No one puts out other people’s lamps. It is the lack of oil which puts them out.
Those who are ready to perform menial tasks show themselves fit for great ones.
If you fail to act, you cannot compensate for it by speaking more.
Man has to pay the price for his own faults. But after making a mistake, he tries to find someone who will pay the price for him.
Pay heed to the realities of existence and plan your life accordingly.
In times of personal disaster do not become full of hate, pride and egoism.
It is better to bear the pelting of pebbles rather than bear the brunt of great rocks descending upon one’s head.
Reacting to provocation brings negative results, whereas ignoring provocation leaves the way clear to embark on planned construction and consolidation.
The right approach is to inculcate the mentality of adjustment, for it is this quality of adjustment which makes a person capable of surviving with all kinds of people.
This world runs on the principle of give and take. Here no value is placed on grievances, protests and demands. The simple rule observed by this world is receiving and giving in equal measure.
It has been observed that if you want to achieve success for yourself, you should cultivate the virtue of patience, for success is always dependent upon the exercise of patience.
A man of principle and character is always just. This predictability of character is maintained even when he has cause for complaint; when he has been treated unjustly by others.
The wise are those who try to avoid explosive situations, thus saving themselves from the trammels of confrontation.
In this world one has to sink before one can rise; one has to resign oneself to loss before one can gain, to backwardness before one can advance; one has to be able to accept defeat before one can claim victory.
One who remains in harmony with the status quo and launches one’s struggle in the sphere of the possible is sure to succeed
There is nothing for us to do but to fit in with the order of nature. Much as we may try, it is impossible for us to have things any other way.
The way to survive highly charged situations in life is by not letting oneself be inwardly affected by one’s outward situation; by suppressing one’s emotions and keeping one’s feelings under control.
A single human weakness cannot be considered in isolation. It has to be looked upon as being representative of the entire personality. If an individual proves unreliable in one matter, he is likely to evince the same unreliability in other matters.
In everyday matter, where there is none of the stress and strain of opposition, no one has difficulty in being tolerant. It is only in situations fraught with conflict, that the truly tolerant man will prove his mettle.
History testifies that one who acts on impulses and emotional reactions invariably fails; and one who responds rationally, always succeeds.
A man on the highest pedestal of realism is one who can think dispassionately, take decisions objectively, rising above his own self.
Patience is no retreat. Patience gives the strength to restrain one’s emotions in delicate situations and use one’s mind to find a course of action along result-oriented lines.
While one short emotional outburst is all that is needed for violence to be indulged in, a peaceful action requires serious thought and strong justification.
Although many allurements exist in this world, they are there purely to put man to the test. They are not something desirable for man. In avoidance of temptation man shows that he is prudent and a man of principles.
When you are provoked by a remark of your critic, all you do is react. But when you resist provocation, you are able to give an answer which will render your critic speechless.
What is simplicity? Simplicity is that state of living in which man has realized the purpose of his life and given it the utmost importance, while regarding everything else as secondary.
Success is a matter of making decisions with a calm mind, without constant wavering and changing of the mind, acute observation, initiative, and unremitting attention to a vast number of petty details.
A negative personality exhibits the characteristics of weakness such as sinfulness and
hypocrisy. Such personalities are guided not by principles but by pure self-interest.
Hypocrisy means being something from within and something quite other from the outside. Hypocrites say one thing but do something quite different with the objective of deceiving others by glib talk.
The benefit of patience and tolerance is that, even after suffering losses, the bereft one does not lose his balance. In spite of temporary defeat, he never loses the ability to think cool-mindedly and, by making a realistic assessment of his situation, plans his life anew. By forgetting what is lost, he reorganizes his work.
The way of peace runs an even course from beginning to end, while the path of violence is strewn with obstacles. In peace, construction is all, while with violence, destruction is all.
The greatest thing for man to target in this world is the nurturing of a noble personality. One who does so is a real human being. Such is the individual considered desirable by God.
The only way to deal with the irksome side of daily living is to exercise patience.
Patience will ensure that whenever one has some bitter experience, one will opt for
the way of tolerance rather than that of reaction to provocation.
Difference is not an evil, it is a great blessing. For, the absence of uniformity is the secret to intellectual development. It has rightly been said, “When everyone thinks alike, no one thinks very much.”
Violence and peace both have wide connotations. Violence includes everything from hatred to war. Peace includes everything from tolerance to love. Both violence and peace are the results of human thinking.
If one prays in the true spirit of prayer, then one’s prayer will surely fend away indecency and evil. But if one’s prayer is devoid of spirit, then it will be no more than a perfunctory action which has no connection with one’s real life.
Anger is the major reason for relationships going sour. Anger stokes a quarrel which then begets hatred. And hatred eventually leads to evil. Anger is a natural phenomenon. The only solution to anger is to control it.
Strong belief in something makes one rise above one’s worldly situation. It makes one concentrate on one’s end in life. No matter what hindrances and obstacles lie in one’s path, one shoulders on until one reaches one’s final destination.
Most of the problems in life are due to ignorance. Recognize your ignorance, do something about it, and you will be saved from unnecessary problems.
When man avoids violence and war, although the way of war is open to him, he
chooses the noblest line of conduct – restraint.
The best principle for maintaining harmony in the home is the art of difference management. Instead of making futile attempts to eliminate difference, we should learn to adjust to it.
In this world almost everyone makes mistakes. But he finds that after every mistake certain opportunities arise through which he is able to rectify matters—thus saving himself from the evil consequences of his mistakes.
When a man is born into this world, he is like iron ore, raw in form. Nature has produced him like ore, and he has to develop himself on his own. Nature produces ore; man has to convert it into steel.
It is important to investigate everything and anything one hears. Passing things on to others without investigation is a dangerous habit.
The secret of life is not to stand in a person’s way. If one does not make oneself a target for another’s vengeance, but lets everyone continue pursuing his own goal in life, then one is not going to find one’s own path blocked by others.
It is temperament that plays the most crucial role in the making of a nation. A character that can be depended upon through thick and thin is what in the long run builds a nation.
The conviction that one’s goals are worthwhile, the observation of discipline with no
contradiction between words and thoughts, cool thinking even in times of crisis—all
these are qualities of mind and heart which determine success, and obviate failure in
the wider field of life.
In the face of adversity one’s hidden capacities come to the fore and it is possible for one to reach undreamt of heights. But first and foremost there has to be the will to do so.
When one has no work to occupy oneself physically or mentally, one falls a prey to morbid brooding and one’s own unending frustration which finds an outlet in negativity.
One may be beset by the most grievous handicaps in life, but it is always possible to rise above them. However, this can be done by one who is willing to endure some “initial pain”; and put in some “extra effort” to achieve one’s goal.
If one is unmindful of God, one will react in whatever manner one’s own desires and interests demand. If, however, one’s faith is strong, every event throughout one’s life will remind one of God; the entire range of one’s emotions is then concentrated not on oneself, but on God.
The people who ultimately succeed are those who are undaunted by disadvantageous circumstances, who waste no time in lamenting over them.
People have to be patient with one another, putting other’s needs before their own, thinking of the good of others rather than what they themselves desire. It is through the sacrifice of individuals that there can be such a thing as concerted effort.
Sometimes, in the course of daily life, a feeling of helplessness comes over man, the same kind of helplessness that he experiences after the observation of the universe through a telescope. This helplessness can be overcome only if man submits to his Creator.
To fight with one’s friends is to become one’s own worst enemy. It is to destroy oneself as one’s enemies are always seeking to do.
Belief in a God of perfection is more than just a dogma. It illuminates man’s soul and enraptures his heart. If one relishes a deli¬cious fruit, and goes into ecstasy on hearing a tuneful melody, how then can one fail to be moved by the discovery of God, who is the fountain¬head of all goodness.
Land which converts earth into trees is fertile land: land which does not do this is sterile. So it is with man. Whoever is able to awaken his inner mechanism in such a way that it begins to convert raw matter into sublime matter is a true believer.
Success is a matter of making decisions with a calm mind, without constant wavering and changing of the mind, acute observation, initiative, and unremitting attention to a vast number of petty details.
High positions of power have always been objects of envy for the people. However, these coveted seats lose their charm as soon as they come within our grasp. The price we pay for them is our freedom – mental, moral, emotional and physical – and surely renunciation of such freedoms is too great a price to pay for anything so purely material.
Strong is the one who has few needs; whose desires are limited; who does not seek fame and luxury; who finds pleasure in being humble, rather than in pretending to be big. Such a person is free of mental complexes, so nothing prevents him from taking the right decision. He is never obstructed by self-interest. He is ready to undergo any sacrifice in order to achieve his goal.
Faith is another word for discovery of God. God is a never-ending reality; He has no
limit. So discovery of Him is also a never-ending event. Faith that does not grow is
not really faith at all; it is just a manner of neglecting God.
Simplicity is that state of living in which man has realized the purpose of his life and given it the utmost importance, while regarding everything else as secondary.
When we behold a magnificent machine for the first time, we immediately become aware of the skill of its manufacturer. In the same way, if we observe the world, and ponder over the wonders it contains, then the Creator Himself will appear before us; we will gaze on crea¬tion and see there the face of the Lord.
How ironical it is that a small discovery should make a scientist lose himself in a spontaneous outburst of feeling, while the far greater discovery that a believer makes – that of God – should create in him no such feeling. Those who really believe in God feel the joy of their discovery. So uncontrollable is their joy that they cannot help expres¬sing it to others. If there are no traces of the joy of discovery, then the discovery itself has yet to be made.
Every person is between two things, his own desire and the external situation. Simply by running after one’s own desires one cannot achieve one’s goals. One must know the external situation, the external circumstances; the external opportunities. You can achieve your personal target only by taking into consideration the external factors. It is this realistic approach that is called the wise approach.
Death is a journey towards the most difficult stage of life. It signifies one’s entrance – in a state of total powerlessness, destitution and help¬lessness – to the next world. There is a limit to every hardship we bear on earth; but death will make us enter a world of unlimited hardships and difficulties.
Mahatma Gandhi wrote in his autobiography: “My hesitancy in speech, which was once an annoyance, is now a pleasure. Its greatest benefit has been that it has taught me the economy of words. I have naturally formed the habit of restraining my thoughts. And I can now give myself a certificate that a thoughtless word hardly ever escaped my tongue or pen.”
Justice is an indirect result of peace and not the direct result, so the formula is like this: establish peace by accepting injustice for a temporary period. Peace will open the doors of opportunities and by availing the opportunities we can reach our goal, that is,justice.
Man sees only the world. Death is to him, then, a cruel blow, removing him from the land of his dreams. But if he were to see the world beyond death, he would realize that it is that eternal world of infinite blessings that should be worked for. What “new lease of life” can there be when the spectre of death lies in wait? Those who seek new life will find it only in the world that lies beyond death.
When you stand in the Himalayan foothills, you will see torrents of water sent down by the ice melting on the mountaintops. On the way, the fast-flowing water repeatedly meets obstacles in the form of boulders. These hamper the flow of the water, but it does not attempt to break the stones in order to follow a straight course. On the contrary, what it does is avoid the stones and find its way around their sides, and eventually reaches the plains. This is the way of non-violence.
Generally, non-violence is seen as an absence of war. That is, eschewing the way of violent encounter in favour of a peaceful approach. But, this is a very limited definition of non-violence. For, the attitude of non-violence relates to man’s entire life, beginning from the moment he steps into this world. The non-violent way is valid in all ambits, right from hearth and home to the sphere of international affairs.
Just as morning is always followed by night, so does success inevitably follows failure. However, just as the earth must revolve unceasingly if morning is to follow night, so must man be unremitting in his struggle to reach his final goal.
The phenomena of nature show us the way to lead a realistic life; that is, to accept the favourable, while avoiding the unfavourable. For, in this world there will always be a multiplicity of both pleasant and unpleasant situations.
Man bewails the calamities that strike him on earth. But if he were to realize the intensity of the coming day, he would see that all this is nothing compared to what will come to pass. Comfort and self-respect in this world make man complacent and proud. But if he were to know what was lying in store for him, he would be humble before the Lord. “Lord,” he would cry out, “worldly honour and comfort are of no consequence if they do not last through to the next, more abiding stage of life.”
In every aspect of life you have to be a realist, you have to adopt the realistic approach. You have to differentiate between what is the possible target and what is the impossible target; what is achievable and what is not achievable.
The universe around us serves as a vast model. The secret of success for man is to opt for this model in his life. But with a difference. In the rest of the universe this model is established compulsively under the law of nature, while man has to establish this model in his life consciously, of his own free will.
The plants have silently opted for this system of supplying oxygen continuously to
fulfill the necessities of living bodies and keep taking in the unwanted carbon dioxide
exhaled by the living bodies. This is a selfless system of profitability. It is essential
for man also to adopt this system in his life.
Man considers himself free in the present world. He thinks of everything he has as his
own property. But when death comes it will dawn on him, all of a sudden, that he had
just been fooling himself: he had been given freedom as a test whereas he had thought
it was his right; he had taken what was God’s to be his own; he was responsible to
God for his actions, but he lived under the misapprehension that, whatever he did, he
would never be taken to task for it.
According to the law of nature justice is not a part of peace; justice is the result of your own hard work, the natural formula of peace is based on this principle: peace for the sake of peace, so first of all we have to establish peace at any cost. According to the law of nature, peace will certainly open the door of opportunity and by availing those opportunities, you can achieve justice or any other goal.
According to Bertrand Russell there are two forms of knowledge: knowledge of things and knowledge of truths. Only “things” can be directly observed: “truths” can only be understood by indirect observation, or, in other words, inference.
Real spirituality or contemplative spirituality is that which has the power to address our minds. Any kind of spirituality attained at a level lesser than that of our minds is not true spirituality. All forms of ecstasy are just reduced forms of spirituality.
Non-violence is not just passivity. Non-violence, in actual fact, is a well-considered
policy, enabling man to live in peace, even in a violent situation. Indeed, its practice is synonymous with peaceful behaviour.
This world has been devised by God so that man may succeed – but with a struggle. One who is too faint-hearted, too lacking in determination, or too impatient will give up the struggle sooner or later, and that is what will ultimately spell failure. He shall have to pay the price of his own shortcomings.
It is a fact that there is no end to the opportunities in this world. When one opportunity ceases to exist, some other opportunity always arises elsewhere. When one stage in a man’s career comes to an end, there will always be the opportunity to enter a new phase.
According to Islam, violent activism should not be indulged in if peaceful activism is an option.
Death may spare a man from facing human judges, but it will immediately set him before his Maker, the greatest Divine Judge, which will be a much more terrifying experience. This is a matter of the utmost gravity. Were man to ponder upon it, he would be shaken to the very core.
A peace-loving person lives with love in his heart for others, while a violent person is consumed with hatred for others.
Positivity prevails throughout nature. Negativity just does not exist in the natural world. This teaches us the lesson that we should give a positive response at all times, even in negative situations.
In this world of God, defeat is also the door to victory. The secret of success lies hidden in failure. It is for us to realize this and to avail of it.
All learning is acquired in the school of hard work; all progress is achieved at the price of unflagging effort. Perseverance is a virtue which can be practised at all times, even by one who is crippled by a disease, and even by one who had failed to get a degree from a university. Hard work, in fact, is the brightest jewel in the crown of human virtues.
According to Islam, Paradise is the ideal human abode, and is thus called the ‘Home of Peace.’ It is also said that, the people of Paradise will wish ‘peace’ to one another, indicating that the social culture of the people of Paradise will be based on peace.
It is said of the Prophet of Islam that whenever he had an option between two courses of action, he always chose the easier, non-confrontational one.
Whenever individuals, groups or communities are faced with a problem, one way to solve it is by resorting to violence. The better way is to attempt to solve the problem by peaceful means, avoiding violence and confrontation.
The study of the Prophet’s life shows that he never initiated a military move himself. When his opponents wanted to embroil him in war, he would on all occasions apply some strategy of avoidance to avert war. He fought only when there was no other way left to him.
The study of the Prophet’s life shows that he never initiated a military move himself. When his opponents wanted to embroil him in war, he would on all occasions apply some strategy of avoidance to avert war. He fought only when there was no other way left to him.
The most delicate aspect of man’s life is that his existence does not come to an end after death. He has to be reborn in another world. The present world is the world of action, while the world to come will be one in which he reaps his reward.
Man has to pass his life in this world in such a way that every happening becomes for him a reminder of the Day of Judgement. His sleeping and rising should also serve as reminders of life after death.
People have to be patient with one another, putting others’ needs before their own, thinking of the good of others rather than what they themselves desire. It is through the sacrifice of indi¬viduals that there can be such a thing as concerted effort.
One has to lead one’s life in this world in such a way that you become a giving person. You become friends of others and everyone will become your friend. You bear with the unpleasantness of others then you will find people around you who bear with the unpleasant thing from you. You benefit others and then you will find a world where everyone will be busy benefiting others.
This is a world of give and take. Here man finds only what he has given to others. In short, others will behave with you just as you behave with them.
Generally, people think of patience as a negative type of passivity, but it is not. Patience is a positive attitude. In fact, it is the very foundation of all positive actions. Without patience, one cannot achieve anything worthwhile in life.
Every moment of his life, man ought to keep praising God—God, who has made the most superb provision for him, both physical as well as spiritual.
At every moment certain incidents take place in the life of a man. These incidents appear at the level of society, history, the universe, etc. Thinking about these incidents or events and deriving lessons from them, is food for the soul.
If you want to live like a flower you will find your way to a bed of flowers. But if your existence is replete with thorns, you will find a world full of thorny shrubs.
Paradise is for those pure positive souls, who, in their life before death, came up to the standard of the citizenship of paradise.
Man has repeatedly to undergo such experiences as produce negative feelings within him, for instance, anger, hatred, violence, and revenge. Man ought to bury these feelings instantly, for, if he fails to do so, they will become a permanent presence in the human mind, and a time will come when it will be almost impossible to eliminate them.
God, according to His plan of creation made a perfect world called paradise. A world which is in accordance with the desires of human beings, in that it is free of all kinds of limitations and disadvantages, including fear and pain. There, man will have every opportunity to live to his full capacity. His being will have its fulfillment. He will not fall victim to any decline or decay.
In life, there are some tasks that a person can perform in a short while, on his own. But there are other tasks that cannot be performed by one person alone. The only way to perform these tasks is by adopting the method of the bees – that of combined effort.
According to a German psychologist, Alfred Adler, a unique quality possessed by human beings is ‘their power to turn a minus into a plus’.
The human brain is a treasure house of unlimited power. If man loses his peace of mind at a time of crisis, he is not in a position to utilize his mental capacity in a positive way. Negative thinking is an obstacle to human development, while positive thinking is like a life-giver in that it stimulates human capacities.
The concept of God provides man with an ideology in which loss is turned to gain and in which adversity brings with it good tidings.
The movement of the earth around the sun is essential for the healthy functioning of life on earth. If the earth did not revolve around the sun, its existence would have no meaning, and life would come to an end. This example is indeed a physical demonstration that shows how man must revolve around God, just as the earth revolves around the sun.
Generally, people think of patience as a negative type of passivity, but it is not. Patience is a positive attitude. In fact, it is the very foundation of all positive actions. Without patience, one cannot achieve anything worthwhile in life.
The present world is nothing but a tiny interlude in our never-ending life span. The present world has been designed as a ‘testing ground’ for man; the Last Day as the ‘result day’ of man’s test; and the after-world as the time for man to have the eternal ‘reward’or ‘punishment’, depending upon how he fared in his ‘test’.
Tolerance is not an act of compulsion. It is a positive principle of life, expressing the noble side of a man’s character. The existence of tolerant human beings in a society is just like the blooming of flowers in a garden.
There is nothing wrong in diversity of opinions. In fact, this is a positive quality that has many advantages. The beauty of the garden of life is enhanced if the flower of unity is accompanied by the thorn of diversity.
A study of the life of the Prophet of Islam tells us that education, which is the arousal of human awareness, is as essential for women as it is for men. Indeed, it is only aware men and women who can conduct the matters of life smoothly.
Peace is a prerequisite for all kinds of human progress. With peace, we progress: without peace, we face ruin. Violence is not the solution to the problems of the world. It only aggravates matters and will never give a solution. The only solution is to live lives on the path of peace.
When facing unpleasant experience, opting for the way of patience and tolerance does not mean treading the path of defeat or retreat. It is, in fact, a future-oriented plan. It amounts to a voluntary acceptance of reality. This means that, even after losing something, one has always to remember that one is still in possession of many other things, utilizing which, one can build anew.
Quran attaches great importance to patience. Patience is set above all other Islamic virtues with the exceptional promise of reward beyond measure.
Non-violence should never be confused with inaction or passivity. Non-violence is action in the full sense of the word. Rather it is more forceful an action than violence. It is a fact that non-violent activism is more powerful and effective than violent activism. Non-violent activism is not limited in its sphere. It is a course of action which may be followed in all matters.
According to Islamic belief, both men and women are born as equal partners in life. In a fine-expression of gender equality, the Quran declares: “Never will I waste the work of any of you, be he male or female: You are members, one of another.” (3:195)
Man needs to convert non-peace into peace, for only after this conversion is he able to play the role of a peaceful person.
When one is angry he is all too prone to turn to violence. But the truth is that violence is no solution to any problem. For one who can prevent himself from succumbing to anger, there is no situation, which he will not be able to turn to good account. He will seek a peaceful solution—the only sure way to solve any problem.
Giving vent to anger is a sign of weakness, whereas the mastering of anger is a sign of power. Anger confounds one’s thinking capacity. The angry man can neither understand any issue in a clear-headed way, nor can he give a response which is adequate to the situation.
Peaceful revolution is the outcome of peaceful thinking. Peaceful minds make for a peaceful world. Man was born in peace. Man must die in peace. Peace – man’s birthright – is God’s greatest blessing for human beings.
The present world is a world of differences. A reformer has rightly said that nature abhors uniformity. This means that difference is a part of nature. Difference is there in every aspect of life. Who has the power to remove differences? We have to learn the art of difference management rather than the art of difference elimination.
According to divine law the relationship between man and woman was set up on the principle of the division of labor, i.e. it is the responsibility of the man to carry out tasks outside the home, while the woman takes charge of tasks within the home.
The conviction that one’s goals are worthwhile, the observation of discipline with no contradiction between words and thoughts, cool thinking, even in times of crisis—all these are qualities which determine success, and obviate failure in the wider field of life.
According to the Quran there are two faculties in every human being which are mutually antipathetic. One is the ego, and the other is the conscience, called respectively nafs ammara and nafs lawwama. What the violent method invariably does is to awaken the ego, which necessarily results in a breakdown of social equilibrium. On the other hand,non-violent activism awakens the conscience, from which results an awakening and self-appraisal in people.
In Islam, war is not the prerogative of the individual but of an established government. Only an established government can declare war. Only when a war is declared by the ruling government, can the public join in and support it, and not before that. Islam does not sanction individual actions on this issue.
Islam is based on monotheism, its goal being to make people realize the existence of the one and only God and to strive to bring about a change in their hearts and minds in order that they may love God as is His due. And the greatest concern of man should be to fear and worship his Creator.
The goal of the Islam is to make people realize the existence of God and to strive to bring about a change in their minds on positive lines.
A flowing stream is a model for man as it irrigates the fields without expecting anything in return. Without the inculcation of these altruistic values among human beings, no meaningful life on earth is possible.
In order that each should continue on his life’s journey without colliding with his fellow men, it is necessary to establish boundaries, both moral and physical, for all human beings without exception: a balance has to be struck so that there should be no clash between individuals or societies.
A great advantage of the non-violent method is that by following it no part of one’s time is wasted. The opportunities available in any given situation may then be exploited to the fullest extent.
The very word ‘Islam,’ from the Arabic silm, connotes peace. According to a tradition of the Prophet, ‘Peace is Islam’. This means that peace is one of the prerequisites of Islam.
A movement cannot be a jihad just because its leaders describe it as such. An action can be termed a ‘jihad’ only when it fulfils the conditions set by Islam. Any action which is carried out without fulfilling these conditions will not be a jihad but a fasad, which will amount to spreading corruption across the world. Those who engage in such a ‘jihad’ will not deserve any reward. They should expect only divine punishment.
‘Jihad’ essentially is a peaceful struggle. One form of this peaceful struggle is dawah, i.e., communication of the message of God.
While peace is a boon for human society, violence is a curse. Peace fosters a high level of human culture and helps it to flourish, whereas violence breeds a jungle culture. Peace elevates humanity to the level of civilized social existence, whereas violence causes a descent into barbarism. Peace brings the good elements of a society into prominence, while violence does the very opposite.
Scholars have defined peace thus: “Peace is the absence of war.” Peace is generally studied as the antithesis to war. But this is an extremely limited concept of peace. The truth is that peace relates to the entire spectrum of human life. In itself it is a complete ideology.
The concept of a living and powerful God is necessarily accompanied by the concept of accountability. And, the concept of accountability guarantees right thinking and right actions on the part of man. It makes man cautious by reminding him of God’s chastisement.
Sometimes, in the course of daily life, a feeling of helplessness comes over man, the same kind of helplessness that he experiences after the observation of the universe through a telescope. This helplessness can be overcome only if man submits to his Creator.
Land which converts earth into trees is fertile land: land which does not do this is sterile. So it is with man. Whoever is able to awaken his inner mechanism in such a way that it begins to convert raw matter into sublime matter is a true believer.
Spirituality is the essence of all religions. Spirituality awakens the mind. Spirituality is a great strength at all times. Spirituality is the best formula for character building. Spirituality is a promoter of all good and a killer of all evils.
Nature provides a pointer towards the future, everlast¬ing world. One who listens to its appeal, and moulds one’s life accordingly, will be the truly successful in this life, and in the Hereafter.
For a people who have the fortitude, to carry on their schemes from one generation to the next, working consistently and steadfastly, there is no mountain or river on earth which they will not be able to conquer.
Admitting one’s faults and shortcomings is rare, for it requires great courage. Without it, we cannot make social progress. Since every defeat is attributable to a gap in the line of defence, the best remedy is to accept it, for in so doing, one is well on the way to solving the problem.
A tree stands above the ground, fixing its roots firmly beneath the ground. It grows from beneath, upwards into the air; it does not start at the top and grow downwards. The tree is our teacher, imparting to us the lesson of nature that if we seek to progress outwardly we must first strengthen ourselves inwardly; we must begin from the base of our own selves before we can hope to build society anew.
The principles we are required to keep in mind while driving are the same as those we should keep in mind on our journey through life. If one wishes, one can learn from the “highway code” the principle that one should follow in the vaster arena of life.
When one feels sufficiently inspired to perform a task, one undertakes it at all costs, even on one’s deathbed, and even when one’s external circumstances are totally adverse. It is one’s will and one’s motivation to work which are of prime importance. Health and strength are secondary.
Those who are destined to perform great deeds in life are those who do not seek any reward for what they have done; the very fact that they have done something is sufficient reward for them. The knowledge that they have played their part is enough to make them content, even more so than those who have been abundantly rewarded for their efforts.

The knowledge that they have played their part is enough to make them content, even more so than those who have been abundantly rewarded for their efforts.
This spirit of give and take, which is a matter of instinct in a family, can emerge in a community only through conscious effort on the part of its members. While it is emotional bonds that keep families from disintegrating, it is a rational effort which cements society, causing its members to be together despite all differences.
Islam is a scheme of spiritual development. The goal of Islam is to establish direct communion between God and man in order that man may become the recipient of divine inspiration.
In matters of criticism or expression of differences, the right approach is for people to end unnecessary sensitivity to it instead of attempting to put an end to criticism and differences. This is the demand of Islam as well as of nature.
Education makes man a right thinker and correct decision-maker. Education brings him knowledge from the external world, teaches him to reason, and acquaints him with past history, so that he may be a better judge of the present.
Always confine your activities to your own sphere; if you infringe on the sphere of others, you are sure to clash with them: your progress will come to an abrupt halt.
The Prophet of Islam once observed: “The best among you is one who is best for his family.” This applies to all individuals, be they men or women, young or old. The ideal way for any individual to prove his worth is to become a modest member of his family.
Inclinations towards peace or violence serve as indicators of the true character of the human being. If the former proves the humanity of the individual, the latter proves his animality, despite his appearing to be a human being.
The only condition of success is continuous effort, that is, to make such unflagging efforts, as are essential to achieve the desired objectives.
The conviction that one’s goals are worthwhile, the observation of discipline with no contradiction between words and thoughts, cool thinking, even in times of crisis—all these are qualities which determine success, and obviate failure in the wider field of life.
In moments of crisis, when the individual opts for the way of peace, he cultivates positive thinking. He raises his moral standards. Indeed, he gives a proof of his being a human being.
The true believer is one who leads his life in the sphere appointed for him by God. It is those who unswervingly pursue the course set for them by their Creator, will share God’s blessings in this world as well as His eternal blessings in the Hereafter.
Faith should be absorbed in a person like dye dissolved in water. Just as the emotions of love and hate are felt by the whole body so, when one adopts Islam in the real sense of the world, it should become an issue affecting one’s whole existence.
The nature of every human being constantly urges him or her to recognize the need for God. Without God, our lives cannot be complete. Without the help of God, we cannot succeed in life.
In this vast universe, man’s only source of support is God. It is by God’s guidance that man’s ship is brought safely to the shore. Belief in God is the most important thing for man. Man is nothing without this belief.
When a man opts for the path of violence to solve his problems, he slides down the slippery slope towards perdition. He makes it all too clear that he is suspect as a human being.
The Creator has placed necessary safeguards within nature itself. The only thing we should do is to learn of these things provided by nature, and apply them in our lives. The way of nature is silent communication. Those who can understand this language of silence will be able to listen to the voice of nature, and benefiting from it, will lead successful lives.
A wise man is one whose rival gets to know his plans only after he has brought them to completion.
For the human character to retain its superiority there must be staunch and unceasing adherence to the principle of avoidance.
It is not ease but effort, not facility but difficulty that makes a man.
A person with no sense of commitment is only living on the fringes of existence. He is out of touch with reality and will soon lapse into utter degeneracy. No really superior being has ever been found among the ranks of the idle. As the old saying goes, the Devil finds work for idle hands.
To complain about things is a fruitless exercise. If one wants to complain, one is sure to find plenty to complain about in life. The wise way is to forget the unpleasant things which are a part and parcel of life, bury grudges, and carry on seeking to fulfill one’s true purpose in life.
Just as it is wrong to delay, it is equally wrong to be in too much of a hurry. All work can be completed in due course. In the world of God, where every event has its allotted time, both extremes are doomed to failure.
All the messengers of God sent in ancient times came to teach man to worship the one God alone, so that he might accordingly reform his life in this world and share in God’s blessings in the next.
Worship is the ultimate stage in any relationship: that is why, whatever its form, it must have God as its object.
A monotheist is one who accords the supreme status to the one and only God. He asks Him alone to meet his needs. He does obeisance before Him; he trusts Him implicitly and above all others, reserving for Him the supreme status in all respects.
Only one God is the Creator of this world. He alone is its Lord and Sustainer. Believing in something other than God, amounts to according the status of an actual reality to a self-concocted supposition. This presupposes the existence of something which has no existence at all.
As soon as a person effaces himself, he becomes capable of building for the future of humanity. Such a person lays personal grievances to one side. As his own self-interest and ambitions evaporate before his eyes, he shows no reaction, as if all this were not happening to him at all.
Fasting is a training course. Its purpose is to place man on a special spiritual plane for one month so that he may be better able to lead the life of a true devotee of God and a true lover of humanity.
The secret of a successful family life lies in willing to serve and cooperate. Every family member should have the desire to come to the assistance of others and be willing to live in harmony with them, without allowing differences and complaints to mar the domestic atmosphere.
The field of education, covering ethics, religion, skills and general knowledge, is a very broad and very vital one. Without education, the training of the human mind is incomplete. No individual is a human being in the proper sense until he has been educated.
What man does by fasting is engaging himself more and more in the remembrance and worship of God, and in the recitation of the Quran. Thus, fasting serves as a method to increase the efficacy of worship.
After the night comes the dawn, so that in its light individuals may continue their journey without a break.
Those who are unable to bear losses patiently tend to lapse into negative thinking. In this way, their life becomes a burden to themselves and to others. On the contrary, those who have patience and courage, build a new edifice on the ruins of the past.
Instead of combating violence with violence, we should adopt the policy of avoidance; remaining united in spite of differences.
Inclinations towards peace or violence serve as indicators of the true character of the human being. If the former proves the humanity of the individual, the latter proves his animality, despite his appearing to be a human being.
The benefit of patience and tolerance is that, even after suffering losses, the bereft one does not lose his balance. In spite of temporary defeat, he never loses the ability to think cool-mindedly and is able to plan his life anew.
Fasting produces moral discipline within man. By restricting the basic things he desires, the devotee is trained to lead a life of self-restraint.
Islam tells us that on occasions of differences we should adopt the policy of avoidance. That is, instead of behaving violently and fighting, we should opt for the course of tolerance and forbearance.
Avoidance of friction is one of the most important principles of Islam. Such avoidance means refraining from retaliation on all occasions of complaint and dissension.
Whenever the state of peace prevails in a society in the real sense, its members will necessarily engage themselves in positive activities. Their energies will be channelized into the reconstruction of their own lives and of their social environment.
Violence is not the solution to the problems of the world. It only aggravates matters and will never give a solution. The only solution is to live, lies on the path of peace.
Fasting awakens in man the feeling of gratefulness. The temporary deprivation of food and water stresses for him the importance of these things as divine blessings. It increases manifold his feelings of gratitude to God.
Death is not the end of a person’s life. It is only the beginning of the next stage of life. Death is that interim stage when man leaves this temporary world of today for the eternal world of tomorrow.
Although many allurements exist in this world, they are there to put man to the test. In avoidance of temptation man shows that he is a man of principles.
The present imperfect and temporary world is the world of action, while the world of the perfect, eternal Hereafter is the place for reaping the harvest of actions.
Self-abnegation and acceptance of God is desired only while God is still invisible. Surrendering before God after seeing Him in the Hereafter will not benefit anyone.
The relationship between Islam and a believer should be like that of dye and water. Islam should merge with the believer’s whole being, it should enter into his thoughts, moulding his intellect in its own fashion.
Fasting is performed in order to reduce man’s materialism and increase his spirituality, so that he may be able to lead a truly spiritual life in this world.
Peace is a prerequisite for all kinds of human progress. With peace, we progress: without peace, we face ruin.
It is a general principle of success in this world that any great success awaits only that courageous person who can devote himself to his work unceasingly for a long period of time; who can continue his onward journey through frustrations; who can rise again after every fall; who can always remain active for the attainment of its goal whether or not he receives recognition and applause.
True submission to God does not mean just acknowledging His existence. It involves total attachment to Him. It is an inward state with an outward form. Discovery of God is an event of incomparable impact which can never remain hidden. If God’s truth has been revealed to someone, it will always be apparent. One so favoured will desire those around him to bear witness to the fact that he has answered the call of God, set
aside the idols of worldly gain and expediency, and devoted himself entirely to God. If one claims inner faith, but does not express it, one can only be looking at faith as a convenience. Anyone who puts worldly interests before God cannot ever discover Him. Preoccupation with worldly priorities and prejudices are the very opposite of true
submission to God, and two such conflicting states can never merge in one soul.
One should never do anything of any importance when in an angry mood. Steps to counter adversaries should be taken only after all anger has subsided. This will mean fewer setbacks and more successes in life.
It is not ease, but effort, not facility, but difficulty which make a man what he is.
First and foremost there has to be the will to perform action. There has to be the will to stop wallowing in self-pity and to get up and take action.
Peaceful revolution is the outcome of peaceful thinking. Peaceful minds make for a peaceful world. Man was born in peace. Man must die in peace. Peace—man’s birthright—is God’s greatest blessing for human beings.
As per the scheme of nature, peace is the only secret of smooth functioning in human society as well as in the rest of the universe. Peace is such a basic requirement of man, that it is crucial to maintain it in all situations. Without peace there can be neither development nor progress. No excuse whatsoever justifies the use of violence, in individual or national life. Regardless of how unfavourable circumstances might be, an environment of peace is indispensable. We must maintain peace unilaterally, for nothing that we desire can be achieved without it.
However, a peaceful life can be achieved only when human beings learn what their limitations ought to be. According to the Divine law, you can take from the world whatever will satisfy your need—not your greed. You may do business with others, but you may not exploit them. You may also establish your individuality, but not at the cost of the family and society. In daily existence, you may lead your life by maintaining social
traditions and not by destroying them.
Generally, people think of patience as a negative type of passivity, but it is not. Patience is a positive attitude. In fact, it is the very foundation of all positive actions. Without patience, one cannot achieve anything worthwhile in life.
Experience has shown that complacency and a sense of comfort can be even greater vitiating factors in man’s progress through life than devastation and despair. This does not mean that adversity by itself is beneficial. No! It is simply the spark which ignites the fuel of man’s soul and drives him on to greater things. It is the mainspring of his initiative and the force which propels him relentlessly forward. In the face of adversity his hidden capacities come to the fore and it is possible for him to reach undreamt of heights.
When facing unpleasant experience, opting for the way of patience and tolerance does not mean treading the path of defeat or retreat. It is, in fact, a future-oriented plan. It amounts to a voluntary acceptance of reality. This means that, even after losing something, one has always to remember that one is still in possession of many other things by utilizing which one can build anew.
In times of grim affliction, provided one has the will, all one’s hidden potential and latent faculties are brought into play. One can think better, plan more successfully and make the greater efforts needed to bring one’s plans to fruition. One who lacks the will to improve his life is just like an idling motor which is going nowhere.
Peace is the result of planned action, while violence is purely an aggressive response to any kind of provocation. The peace-loving person first thinks and then acts. The violent person first acts and then thinks.
In man’s life the most important thing is the will to act. If one succumbs to a sense of loss and frustration, and frittered his energies away in futile political protest, he is doomed to ruination.
In this world of God, innumerable events are taking place, all of which are based on eternal, immutable laws. Not even a blade of grass grows here on the ground as a result of wishful thinking, not even an ant can manage to live by ignoring the realities of life. How is it possible then for man to change the divine laws? The only condition of success is continuous effort, that is, to make such unflagging efforts, as are essential to achieve the desired objectives in the world of God according to the law of God. By following the same principle we can achieve success in this world; it is the same principle which will bring us success in the next world.
No success is possible in this world without working for a long time. This is because God has not created this world on the basis of instant success. Man must learn his lesson and should not fritter away his time in futile efforts.
We can create a nation only if its inhabitants are imbued with a sense of purpose and, to that end, we must educate our people: they must have full knowledge of both the past and the present if they are to progress towards an ideal future. We have to inculcate in them the will to work unitedly in spite of their disagreements. We have to instill in them the courage to sacrifice their personal feelings and their short-term interests for long-term ones. Only then will it be possible to fashion history anew.
In any task of greater or lesser complexity, there are always aspects of it which present problems which appear at first sight to be insoluble. Sometimes innumerable facts have to be marshalled which can be interpreted only with the keenest of insight. Often a mysterious, elusive factor emerges just at a point when one thinks that all questions have been answered. Such difficulties can be overcome, and such secrets unveiled only when one’s total intellectual capacity is directed towards the unraveling of the mystery. Without the utmost devotion and one hundred per cent concentration, success will remain forever beyond one’s grasp.
To succeed man has to be so engrossed in his work that everything else pales into insignificance beside it. Unless everything else loses its interest for him, he cannot climb to any great heights of success. If we examine the lives of the truly great, we find that they all worked in the same dedicated way.
Those who complain of non-recognition and applause at unfavourable circumstances; whose eyes are set on problems rather than on opportunities can never attain their goal in life.
In the use of violence, man simply follows his basic instincts, while to promote peace; man has to give himself a complete moral overhaul. Only after such a conversion is the individual able to play the role of a peace-loving person.
In the use of violence, man simply follows his basic instincts, while to promote peace; man has to give himself a complete moral overhaul. Only after such a conversion is the individual able to play the role of a peace-loving person.
For violence to erupt provocation is enough; while for peace to prevail man has to nullify provocation with moderation and restraint.
Man needs to convert non-peace into peace, for only after this conversion is he able to play the role of a peaceful person.
For peace to be a reality in the world of man, man has to be a well-wisher rather than an ill-intentioned person of others.
Human beings are by nature egoists. Whenever their ego is hit, it turns into a super ego. As a result a hostile reaction is produced which easily becomes converted into hatred and the urge to do violence. The only way is to avoid touching another person’s ego.
A traveller who wants to dash straight as an arrow, without allowing time for twists and turns, will collide with many obstacles in his headlong flight. Far from reaching his destination faster, he will surely come to grief and fall by the wayside. He shall then have to retrace his steps to the starting point, heal his wounds and only then set forth again. All of this will take time, precious time—time which should have been spent on the onward journey. Had he proceeded in a normal, unhurried way, he would have reached his destination all in good time.
God has planned the external world in such a fashion that everything in it serves as a sign of the Higher Reality. Man has, moreover, been endowed with such capabilities as help him to read those signs and understand them. Now those who keep their natural faculties alive and, by availing of them, ponder over the things of the world, will unlock the doors of realisation within themselves. While those who allow the intellect to become sluggish will be unable to learn lessons from anything. They will see, but this will not be the seeing of realisation; they will hear, but this will not be the hearing of realisation.
Man is constantly under trial in this world. To pass all tests, we must learn his practical limitations vis à vis his intellectual limitlessness. By so doing, he can save himself from all misapprehensions, and can exercise his free will in the sphere of reality.
Just as it is wrong to delay, it is equally wrong to be in too much of a hurry. All work can be completed in due course. To delay work is idle and irresponsible, but to do it with unseemly and unwarrantable haste is a sign of crass impatience. In the world of God,where each event has its allotted time, both extremes are doomed to failure.
Dialogue means an attempt to solve the controversial matter through negotiation rather than through confrontation If a dialogue is started with this spirit, its success is certain. The door to the progress of our country is shut for about half a century. And a dialogue keeping this spirit in view can surely open the closed door provided it is conducted with true spirit. (211:7)
A man who has made a mistake can completely erase the marks of what is an unfortunate experience for others by admitting his mistake and begging forgiveness. Some people are pricked by their consciences, but do nothing to assuage the ruffled feelings of others, thinking that to do so would be sheer weakness and would mean a loss of face. Such people can never have healthy social relationships and can never win the respect of their fellow men. They do not realize that a man displays his true mettle when he sees his own wrong actions for what they are, and humbly asks forgiveness.
One who subjects his own behaviour to constant re-appraisal, who is continually scrutinizing himself for weaknesses and faults and who, once having found such faults, wastes no time in rooting them out will succeed.
A single human weakness cannot be considered in isolation. It has to be looked upon as being representative of the entire personality. If an individual proves unreliable in one matter, he is likely to evince the same unreliability in other matters; if he is guilty of untrustworthiness on one occasion, the chances are that this trait will show up time and time again.
It is only he who has learned the art of moral introspection who will, in the long run, prove himself a person of inviolable integrity.
Often people launch themselves on careers, plunging headlong into them, without giving due thought to their actual capacities and to whether they have any real potential which can be developed. At times they are led astray by trivial considerations, ill-founded opinions and overwhelming emotions, and rush heedlessly into whatever first comes their way. When the result is not what they had anticipated, they fall to
complaining against others, lamenting their losses and failures and claiming that it was due to the prejudices of others that they had had to suffer frustrations and that their careers had come to naught. Had they given more profound thought to the matter, they would have realised that the fault lay in their own ill-judged planning or even total aimlessness. Had they started out in the right direction, others would not then have had the opportunity to place obstacles in their path and turn their successes into failures.
Both in our private lives and social existence, it is imperative that we take stock of our means and resources and then set off in the right direction, if, sooner or later, we are to reach our destination.
A western thinker once commented, “You have removed most of the road blocks to success when you have learnt the difference between motion and direction.”
The source of its energy is the mysterious phenomenon of our world called life. Life is an astonishing, ongoing process of this universe—a force which will claim its rights in this world, and, even when uprooted, it continues to exist, albeit dormant, at one place or the other and reappears the moment it finds the opportunity. Just when people have come to the conclusion that, because there is nothing visible on the surface, life must be at an end, that is just when it rears its head from the debris.
A goal can be achieved in the course of ten years, but you want to attain it in just ten days. This means that you want to reach your destination in leaps and bounds. But there is an old saying: “The more hurry, the less speed.”
To complain about things, then, is a fruitless exercise. If one wants to complain, one is sure to find plenty to complain about in life. The intelligent thing to do is to forget the unpleasant things which are a part and parcel of life, bury grudges, and carry on seeking to fulfill one’s true purpose in life.
God has placed unpleasant things alongside the pleasant things of life. Just as the rose bush, along with its exquisite flowers, also possesses piercing thorns, so also does life contain an amalgam of both pleasing and displeasing objects. This is the way God has created the world. There is nothing for us to do but to fit in with this order of nature that He has laid down. Much as we may try, it is impossible for us to have things any other way.
In this present world everything that begins is heading towards its pre-destined end. For instance, a seed, once sprouted, starts its life as a tiny plant then gradually develops into a sapling, then into a fully grown tree. The same is true of the things of this world.
Man’s responsibility to his parents is to pay their dues, to respect them, always to speak gently to them, to fulfil their needs and to be of service to them in the fullest sense of the word.
Man’s obligation to God is to thank Him from the deepest recesses of his heart. He must acknowledge the godhead of God. All his feelings and emotions must be in acknowledgement of God’s blessings until at every moment he comes to remember God, his very existence becomes an expression of God Almighty and he is overwhelmed with thoughts of God.
Man has been created by God with two opposing yet complementary qualities: the spiritual and the physical. On the one hand is his mind, in respect of which he finds himself limitless. He can think anything he wishes; there are simply no boundaries to his thinking. Yet, in his physical existence, man is extremely limited. He is bound by innumerable kinds of constraints. The greatest limiting factor which man faces is death. Death nullifies all greatness in man. This is man’s severest test. In all his apparent greatness, he must acknowledge how humble is his condition. Passing from a limitless to a limited environment he must acknowledge the confines within which he lives. He must accept restrictions in an atmosphere of freedom.
Dialogue is not a meeting of rivalry but is a brotherly meeting. Such noble tasks are performed by rising above the defeat-victory psychology. Its aim is to solve the matter and not confound it. The feeling at work behind a dialogue is one of reconciliation and not one of rivalry.
The individual is the primary unit of society. If individuals are reformed, society follows suit. And if individuals degenerate, society too goes into a decline. That is why our best efforts should centre around the individual, who is, after all, the basic building block of the society. The day we reform individuals in their thousands and tens of thousands, we shall have set ourselves well and truly on the path of successful social reform.
If any dialogue is held with full justice and sincerity, a new chapter will be opened. Both the parties will have to commit themselves for differentiating between issues and non-issues that they will not hold any matter as prestige issue; that they will not adopt the way of claim and counter claim; that they will say anything keeping the result before them; that their way will be one of impartiality; that while pressing their demands they will also be willing to concede that while taking from others they will also be willing to give.
In our world innumerable events take place, governed by the law of nature: for instance, the continuous rotation of the earth, the receiving of light from the sun, the blowing of the wind, the onset of rains, the flowing of rivers, the growing of plants and trees, etc. All occurrences of this nature continue day and night. How striking it is that they
occur in an extremely peaceful manner. There is no violence, no clash, no confrontation. This being the natural way of reform, human beings ought to follow this way of nature, completely shunning violence and confrontation.
Man should not conduct himself violently relying on things like gun or bombs, but should draw their strength from noble human qualities, such as patience, forbearance, avoidance of conflict, a willingness for mutual adjustment, etc. These strategies of a peace-loving person are in conformance with the eternal and ineluctable laws of nature. Those who go against them will certainly create great disturbances everywhere; they
will never be able to establish a reformed system.

Peace is the only religion for both man and the universe. In a peaceful environment all good things are possible, whereas in the absence of peace, we cannot achieve anything of a positive nature, either as individuals, or as a community. The same holds true at national and international levels.
Patience is another name for the non-aggressive method. This means that one who stands up for the truth ought not to counter violence with violence. He must unilaterally adhere to peaceful ways.
The conditions prevailing in ancient times allowed for war in self-defence. But this permission to go to war conformed to the law of necessity. Now, in the present modern age, this need no longer exists, therefore there should be a general ban on war.
Once the peaceful method has been employed, victory and victory alone ensues: there is no room for defeat. Even if a peaceful method does apparently lead to a defeat, the final outcome is even then a victory. For, by using a peaceful method, one might lose a war, but one does not lose opportunities. One still has opportunities and possibilities, by availing of which one can start one’s life all over again and reach the destination of success.
Violence is basically an ego-related problem. It is a provoked ego that creates almost all kinds of violence and disturbance. When one’s ego is affected, it turns into super ego and the result is breakdown. It is inevitably those who suffer from egoism who choose to be inflexible in weathering life’s storms. Conversely, it is the modest who, in the face
of adversity, tread the path of peace. In this world of God, destruction awaits those who indulge in egoism, while success awaits those who conduct themselves with modesty. The same point has been underlined in a hadith:
Ideologically, passive militants regard it as their duty to give full assistance to active terrorists. And if such terrorists are in their thousands, the number of their supporters runs into millions. This being so, the annihilation of known active terrorists would not suffice to put an end to the phenomenon of terrorism. It is essential, therefore, that the issue of the enormous support given by the world-wide network of passive terrorists be immediately addressed. Their minds must be re-engineered. Their violent thinking must be transformed into pacifism. Only then will it be possible to rid the world of the menace of terrorism.
The terrorists’ self-styled ideology gives them the conviction that, by dying in battle, they become martyrs and that, as such, they will have a new and far better life in paradise. It is this belief, which has made suicide bombing totally acceptable to them. Given this situation, it is only when their self-styled ideology is shown to be baseless by producing a counter ideology that their violent actions will ever come to an end.
Modern terrorism must be brought to an end. But this cannot be done through counter attacks. For one thing, this would be like trying to quell non-state terrorism by state terrorism. And for another, modern terrorism derives its strength less from guns and bombs than from its ideology. That is why a counter ideology rather than counter-bombing would the more effectively put an end to terrorism.
The evil of terrorism has come to be a present-day affliction. It is widely condemned, but what terrorism is has not yet been clearly defined. After a great deal of thought on this subject, I have come to the conclusion that terrorism is definable as armed action carried out by non-governmental organizations. Certainly, the public have the right to peacefully present their point of view, but on no consideration do they have the right to engage in militancy, for armed movements of this sort run counter to accepted national and international principles. What is known as terrorism in present times is the result of armed action by NGO’S.

When man sees only the world, death is to him, then, a cruel blow, removing him from the land of his dreams. But if he were to see the world beyond death, he would realize that it is that eternal world of infinite blessings that should be worked for. What “new lease of life” can there be when the spectre of death lies in wait? Those who seek new life will find it only in the world that lies beyond death.
People think that they are being “cheated” by death, but in fact death is the ultimate and most inevitable certainty of our lives. Death cheats no one. It is man that cheats himself: the plans that he should be making for the world after death he makes for this life; only to
find that death awaits him, to put paid to all his dreams.
When we behold a magnificent machine for the first time, we immediately become aware of the skill of its manufacturer. In the same way, if we observe the world, and ponder over the wonders it contains, then the Creator Himself will appear before us; we will gaze on crea¬tion and see there the face of the Lord.
When you are provoked by a remark of your critic, all you do is react. But when you resist provocation, you are able to give an answer which will render your critic speechless.
Not descending to intolerant behaviour, in spite of facing unpleasant situations, is a clear proof of self-control. One who has this ability becomes so strengthened by it that no one can defeat him.

If man were to set his sights on the next eternal world, then he would find there the fulfillment of his heart’s desire in full measure; but instead he aims for fulfillment in this world, where there can be no fulfillment in the first place, and even if it is achieved, it can only be for a very short time. If he were to seek reward for his work on earth with God, then God would never let his efforts go wasted; but instead he seeks reward on earth where any reward is scant and, once given, is sure to be taken away again.
It is a wrong choice made by one suffering from the feeling of deprivation. Any group, rightly or wrongly, may suffer from this feeling. There is only one useful way of getting rid of it and that is by peaceful means. The violent method is so lethal that it is no choice at all for anybody. Violence, from the point of view of its result, only adds to this feeling of deprivation, instead of putting an end to it. Violence is nothing but an outburst of a provoked person. Violence provides no positive solution to any problem.
Many people justify violence by saying that they have been the victims of plots and conspiracies and so must put an end to this by fighting. This excuse is quite baseless. What is generally regarded as a plot is, in actual fact, a manifestation of that plan of nature which has been established in the present world as a natural law.
In any controversy, one way to attempt to settle matters is for both parties to enter into violent confrontation. The better way to settle disputes is to effect a reconciliation at the very outset. econciliation is like a safety valve in any situation where there are conflicting interests and where tempers can become explosive. So at times of
provocation, the best course to adopt is a conciliatory rather than a confrontational one. That is a law of nature.
Although many allurements exist in this world, they are there purely to put man to the test. They are not something desirable for man. In avoidance of temptation man shows that he is prudent and a man of principles.
Man has been given freedom in this world. What is required of him is that, despite possessing total freedom, he should of his own free will become an example of moral, disciplined behaviour. One who thus conducts himself will pass God’s test and will be selected by the Lord, the Creator and Sustainer of this universe, as the beneficiaries of
that most wonderful blessing—eternal paradise.
Everything that exists in this world – be it a vast ocean or a tiny leaf, a dark particle or a radiant sun – is wonderful beyond words. But, from the time of his birth into the world, man sees these things, day in and day out. From continuous exposure, they cease to arouse any astonishment. But these very things, which man looks on without wonderment, would cause him unbounded amazement if he was to see them suddenly, for the first time. This is man’s test in the world – to see a tree and look on it as the first tree: to see the sun shining, and look at it as if he is seeing it for the first time; to hear a bird as if it was the first bird that ever raised its voice in song.
In the use of violence, man simply follows his basic instincts, while to promote peace; man has to give himself a complete moral overhaul. Only after such a conversion is the individual able to play the role of a peace-loving person.
Observing the universe, one cannot fail to be struck by the wonder¬ful works of art, the ingenious displays of consummate skill, which lie before one. There are atoms, dancing around within matter. Two particles – without life – come together to mould a third object – a new life. Stars revolve in space, without the slightest deviation from their set speed. Tiny seeds are transformed into luxuriant trees. Life in all its multiple forms seems like a torrent surging all around us, all these events, and many more, are happening in the universe, but they are happening silently. No cosmic event defines itself. Nothing speaks to man, revealing to him its inner significance.
For violence to erupt provocation is enough; while for peace to prevail man has to nullify provocation with moderation and restraint.
People, who are alive to God’s silent but poignant message in na-ture, humble themselves before Him when signs like earthquakes man-ifest themselves. It is such people who will respond positively to God’s call.
If peace is to be maintained, negative thinking has to be suppressed and replaced with positive thinking.
Willingness to keep the peace—a matter of conscious decision-making—is a noble human quality. For peace, man has to curb his anger and be forgiving. He has to control his feelings of hatred and project feelings of love for others.
Religion is inherent in every action of the true believer just as dye is inherent in every drop of coloured water. The words and deeds of such a person bear the stamp of his faith. With the dis¬covery of God grows a new personality which is reflected in every action. Religion and the person become inseparable.
Peaceable behaviour is indicative of self-control. Self-control is undoubtedly a very great strength: it saves man from engaging in negative activities like violence. One who does not have the power of self control will be enraged at times of provocation and will hurl himself into violent activities.
Patience is no retreat. Patience only amounts to taking the initiative along the path of wisdom and reason as opposed to the path of the emotions. Patience gives one the strength to restrain one’s emotions in delicate situations and rather to use one’s brains to find a course of action along result-oriented lines.
The difference between peace and violence is aptly illustrated by the building of a bird’s nest. A nest can be constructed only by a peaceful effort. Violence can only destroy it, not build it. The same is true of human life. If any constructive work is to be achieved in life, it must be through peaceful efforts. Violence can only destroy life. It cannot build it.
The only way to deal with the irksome side of daily living is to exercise patience.Patience will ensure that whenever one has some bitter experience, he will opt for the way of tolerance rather than that of reaction to provocation.
In this world each piece of bad news is followed by good news. Each adverse incident gives man the good tidings that we should not fall a victim to frustration or lose heart. Rather we should muster enough courage to seek out new opportunities.
Peace is the master key, which opens all doors to success. It paves the way for the success of sincere efforts in all spheres. In a state of peace, we can go about any task: without peace it is impossible to act constructively. This is true of all matters in life, both great and small.
Patience is the exercise of restraint in trying situations. It is a virtue which enables the individual to proceed towards worthy goals.
Patience is a sine qua non for well thought out action impatience can only give rise to thoughtlessness. Patience permits planned action, while impatience leads to acting in excessive haste.
Peace is essential for a better way of living – peace of mind, peace in the family and peace in nature. Today, in our modern, technological world, man apparently has access to everything he desires. In the absence of peace, however, everything will been rendered meaningless.
The secret of success lies in patience. Patience is a state neither of passivity nor of cowardice. It is rather a positive quality. It takes courage to be patient as it requires a superior mental state.
Peace and war are not just two equal modes of achievement in the simple sense of the phrase. Rather they reflect two different standards of humanity. One who adopts the path of peace raises the level of humanity, while one who adopts the path of violence decidedly lowers it.
In the modern age man has only two options: either to refrain from waging war on the grounds that the observance of humanitarian provisos is impracticable or else he commits the crime of hurling himself headlong into war, callously ignoring all humane considerations.
Since man finds himself safe and sound amidst family and friends, he blissfully ignores that, at any moment, death can separate him from the props of this mortal world. Then he will be left to wander alone. He will have no one to assist him. How awful that day will be and how ignorant man is of this grave reality which must inevitably come.
In order to lead a successful life, it is important for man to learn the art of Life Management. The art of life management means, on the one hand man understanding himself, (i.e. he should know who he is, what his capabilities are) and, on the other hand, his becoming aware of the world around him. Then he may plan his life in a realistic manner, and make improvements whenever and wherever required.
The Art of Failure Management in marriage lies in not looking at marriage as something ideal, but as a practical matter and then accepting one’s partner the way he or she is. People generally tend to measure their partners by an ideal yardstick, and when they do not measure up to their expectations, they tend to think that they have not found their ideal soul mate. This happens both in the case of a husband and a wife, and so both partners fail to experience the joys of their union.
A negative feeling such as anger flares up on its own. But, in its initial stage,it remains within a certain limit. And it crosses this limit only when anger is allowed to intensify. The law of nature regarding negative feelings is that it gets activated for only about 30 seconds, and if it is checked, it gets defused like a balloon. Therefore, if a person checks his anger, and does not allow it to person,
the negative feeling will ebb away naturally, without there being any negative outcome.
As a man is egoistic by nature, and a woman emotional, they can often be at loggerheads with each other due to their differences. This difference cannot be obliterated. The only solution to this problem is that, when a man’s ego flares up, the woman should keep her calm; and when the woman becomes emotional and loses her temper, the man must keep likewise calm. They should not give in to reactions of any kind. This is the only solution to this situation.
The greatest thing for man to target in this world is the nurturing of a noble personality. One who does so is a real human being. Such is the individual considered desirable by God according to His creation plan.
The positive aspect of emotionalism is that it tends to make one more sensitive, and therefore more gentle and compassionate, which is, without doubt, a positive quality. But the negative aspect is that it can give one an obstinate personality, thus making one stubborn even when flexible approach is necessary. If one allows this aspect of their nature to go unchecked, it will be detrimental to the wholesome development of one’s personality.
It is necessary for both a husband and a wife to understand this Law of Nature, which I call the ‘Formula of 30 seconds’. Knowing this is the greatest secret of married life and those who have applied it in their lives will never have a major crisis in their marital relations.
The way of peace runs an even course from beginning to end, while the path of violence is strewn with obstacles. In peace, construction is all, while with violence, destruction is all.
The positive aspect of egoism in man is that, it is one of the driving forces in working steadfastly for a cause. A man bereft of this quality will be weak, lacking in will-power, and will fail to accomplish any task which requires determination and perseverance. But the negative aspect is that it will make him arrogant. Therefore, one must be very careful, and not allow one’s ego to sway one towards the negative side, as this would be counterproductive and bring one rite disrepute.
The benefit of patience and tolerance is that, even after suffering losses, the bereft one does not lose his balance. In spite of temporary defeat, he never loses the ability to think coolmindedly and, by making a realistic assessment of his situation, plans his life anew. By forgetting what is lost, he reorganizes his work.
Hypocrisy means being something from within and something quite other from the outside. Hypocrites say one thing but do something quite different with the objective of deceiving others by glib talk.
A woman tends to be emotional, while a man tends to be egoistic. If they are put to positive use, it will prove to be a boon to humanity. But if they are put to negative use, it will prove to be a bane for humanity.
A negative personality exhibits the characteristics of weakness such as sinfulness and hypocrisy. Such personalities are guided not by principles but by pure self-interest.
A purposeful life is an ideal life. Simplicity is a must in order to lead a purposeful life. Simplicity saves man from unnecessary expenditure and distractions— things that hamper him in working towards achieving his goal in life.
The peaceful course ends in success, while the violent course ends in frustration and regret. While following peaceful methods, there is nothing to be lost and everything to be gained. Violent methods, on the contrary, bring no gains, only losses.
The most desirable personality is one marked by such noble human traits as are based on principles, moral values, positivity, love for all mankind and the willingness to acknowledge the worth of others.
Patience is undoubtedly the superior solution to all problems as opting for the way of patience and tolerance, far from being a path of defeat or retreat, is a futureoriented plan. It amounts to a voluntary acceptance of reality. This means that, even after losing something, one has always to remember that one is still in possession of many other things by utilizing which one can build anew.
A very important aspect of the keeping patience is that it helps one to take the trouble to acquaint himself with the standpoint of others, while impatience fosters in one to consider only his own harrow claims.
God has created great potential in humans; it is up to them to realize it. It is very important for them to discover their potential and realize their purpose in life. They should develop their minds through study and through their experiences. They should learn to manage their time and utilize all their resources towards the acquisition of their goals.
The force of sentiment is sufficient to activate man towards violence. But where adhering to peace or adopting a peaceful course of action is concerned this is possible only when there is a very strong justification for peace.
What is simplicity? Simplicity is that state of living in which man has realized the purpose of his life and given it the utmost importance, while regarding everything else as secondary.
What disturbs the peaceful plan of nature is mainly traceable to the fact that people have become excessively materialistic. It is this thinking which leads to the exploitation of nature resulting in the disturbance of the peaceful plan of nature. If people opted for a path of moderation they would soon discover that, if earlier they were comfortable physically, now they are comfortable spiritually. And without doubt spiritual comfort is far better than material comfort.
The patient man will attempt to solve problems only after making a proper assessment of the situation, and with a view to ultimate consequences. The impatient man will jump into the fray without any calculation whatsoever and – a prey to his own seething emotions – will remain blind to any adverse consequences.
The only criterion by which to judge whether one had planned one’s life well or not is to see the result. A plan which yields a negative result is not right, and a plan which yields a positive result is right. Examining an action by an ideal standard is not a wise thing. Wisdom lies in examining things in the light of the result.
The formula to attain peace is very simple. Take your share without usurping that of others. Fulfill your needs without depriving others of theirs. Satisfy your desires without thwarting others and fulfill your ambitions without denying others the right to do likewise. In short, solve your own problems without creating problems for your fellow creatures.
Success is a matter of making decisions with a calm mind, without constant wavering and changing of the mind, acute observation, initiative, and unremitting attention to a vast number of petty details.
The whole life of a true worshipper of God, both inwardly and outwardly, becomes an act of worship, bowing only to God and fearing Him alone—putting His considerations first and foremost in all matters. Placing oneself totally in God’s hands, one becomes God’s own, and God becomes one’s own. And one’s heart overflows with the love of God.
An ancient maxim says: ‘Wait and watch.’ This is not just a maxim; it is a Law of Nature. The policy of waiting means waiting for a better future: waiting for tomorrow to bring something we have not received today. This is undoubtedly a matter of great wisdom, as it is possible that you may receive tomorrow what you have not received today. – Maulana Wahiduddin Khan
According to Islam that person is most precious who leads his life in this world in such a manner that despite facing all sorts of temptations he succeeds in overcoming them. Despite having the power to misuse his freedom, he refrains from doing so. Despite the possibility of leading an unprincipled life, he chooses of his own free will to be a man of principle. To identify such individuals, it is essential that an atmosphere of freedom prevail in the world. This is not possible under any other system.
Islam teaches us to avoid war and confrontation at all costs and commands us to establish peace to the greatest possible degree.
Everyone is endowed with the capacity to play his role in the world, provided he understands the abilities God has given him, and utilizes them determinedly. But the greatest quality required for this job is patience. The capability is created by the Creator, but the price of patience has to be paid by the person concerned.Anyone who can pay this price can play a great role.
In developing one’s personality, the most important thing is for man to broaden his mind by awakening his consciousness. To awaken one’s consciousness, three things are required — study, observation and intellectual exchange with other people.
It is important to investigate everything and anything one hears. Passing things on to others without investigation is a dangerous habit.
When a man is born into this world, he is like iron ore, raw in form. Nature has produced him like ore, and he has to develop himself on his own. Nature produces ore; man has to convert it into steel.
In this world almost everyone makes mistakes. But he finds that after every mistake certain opportunities arise through which he is able to rectify matters — thus saving himself from the evil consequences of his mistakes.
Man has nothing greater to give anyone than love. This being the case, it is impossible for one to discover God – in all His perfection¬ – and then to offer Him something less than love. Neither is any offering less than love acceptable to God, nor is it proper for man to offer his Lord anything less than pure, true love.
The best principle for maintaining harmony in the home is the art of difference management. Instead of making futile attempts to eliminate difference, we should learn to adjust to it.
Those who really believe in God feel the joy of their discovery. So uncontrollable is their joy that they cannot help expressing it to others. If there are no traces of the joy of discovery, then the discovery itself has yet to be made.
The secret of true success lies in construction and consolidation rather than in destroying supposed enemies.
Reconciliation is the best. But it rarely happens that such reconciliation as can be effected exactly reflects the desires of both the parties. In the majority of cases, reconciliation is possible only on a unilateral basis. That is, one party has to suppress his own inclinations and show a willingness to put an end to the dispute in accordance with other party’s wishes.
To lead a purposeful life what man has to do is to raise himself from the level of animal amorality to the level of human ethics. In spite of experiencing feelings of hatred and having the urge to be violent, he should become the embodiment of love and peace. When negative sentiments corrode his heart, he should be able to rid himself of them and make himself a positive thinker.
This world is full of possibilities and opportunities. Here, after losing one opportunity, man will find another. Here, if he finds one door closed to him, he will soon find many other doors open to him. In this way, there is always the possibility that, after the failure of one set of plans, he may work on another set and build his life afresh. One reliable feature of our world is that here the night is always followed by the morning.
The present world is governed on the principle of “no risk, no gain”. It is, therefore, necessary for people to incur losses of different kinds. At times, they are unfairly challenged by others, they fall a prey to economic difficulties, they suffer losses of land and wealth, they meet with an accident or are deprived of certain benefits that should have been theirs by right, and so on. These should be met with patience and tolerance.
When man avoids violence and war, although the way of war is open to him, he chooses the noblest line of conduct – restraint.
It is commonly believed that one born into a wealthy family is fortunate, while one born into a poor family is unfortunate. This is a fallacy. A person is privileged no matter what the circumstances. Even if one is not born with the proverbial silver spoon in one’s mouth, one still had the ‘incentive spoon’!
The perpetrator of violence invariably suffers from remorse, while the peacemaker derives great satisfaction from his efforts. If one were to think of the end result, one would never indulge in violence.
Peace is a product of a positive mental attitude, while violence is the result of a negative thinking. Peace is the natural state of society; violence is an unnatural state. Peace is as much in accordance with nature’s plan as violence is against it. When peaceful conditions prevail in a society all activities take place in their proper form. But if the atmosphere of peace is disturbed, the normal functioning of society is disrupted. This law applies to man, as well as to the entire universe.
Determination is a very good quality. A determined person is able to face the challenges of life; while a person devoid of this quality does not have the courage to face the challenges of life. It is only when one is able to face the challenges of life can one achieve success in life.
Most of the problems in life are due to ignorance. Recognize your ignorance, do something about it, and you will be saved from unnecessary problems.
The temperament of every person is different. This is a natural phenomenon. Differences do not surface when people are mere acquaintances. Differences start surfacing only when they start their lives together. If couples were to accept these differences as a part of nature, they would learn to look beyond them and work towards a meaningful relationship.
Strong belief in something makes one rise above one’s worldly situation. It makes one concentrate on one’s end in life. No matter what hindrances and obstacles lie in one’s path, one shoulders on until one reaches one’s final destination
Peace means normalcy, and normalcy provides all such opportunities as favour the
growth of a healthy environment.
If one prays in the true spirit of prayer, then one’s prayer will surely fend away indecency and evil. But if one’s prayer is devoid of spirit, then it will be no more than a perfunctory action which has no connection with one’s real life.
Violence and peace both have wide connotations. Violence includes everything from hatred to war. Peace includes everything from tolerance to love. Both violence and peace are the results of human thinking.
Difference is not an evil, it is a great blessing. For, the absence of uniformity is the secret to intellectual development. It has rightly been said, “When everyone thinks alike, no one thinks very much.”
Capability and alertness are two qualities that are required for any kind of work. They are indispensable if one wants to achieve one’s goal.
The most important cognitive and moral act in life is recognition of the truth.
Every human being is born with an ego. More often than not, that ego is dormant. It
is better to leave it sleeping, for the ego can be like a snake which, when aroused, will
harm all within its reach.
To utter the three words, “I am wrong” is so difficult that in the long history of mankind there have been very few cases of people who have actually brought themselves to utter them.
One may be beset by the most grievous handicaps in life, but, it is always possible to rise above them. However, this can be done by one who is willing to endure some “initial pain”; and put in some “extra effort” to achieve one’s goal.
In all circumstances, persevere steadfastly in constructive activities. In the end you will emerge victorious.
If one is unmindful of God, one will react in whatever manner one’s own desires and interests demand. If, however, one’s faith is strong, each and every event throughout one’s entire life reminds one of God; the entire range of one’s emotions is then concentrated not on oneself, but on God.
It always takes a bigger man to walk away from a fight than it does to stay and fight.
Each of our steps should be based on realities and not on wishful thinking or vague suppositions.
One should always confine one’s activities to one’s own sphere. For if you infringe on the sphere of others, you are sure to clash with them: your progress will come to an abrupt halt.
When we find one road closed, we should not despair, for if in one particular field there seems to be a discouraging lack of opportunities, one can certainly search for and find opportunities in some other field.
Solidarity has to be achieved at an individual level before it can come about in society.
The cow is nature’s sign that shows how to live in this world. We may take in ‘grass’; but we must give out ‘milk.’ Even when people wrong us, we are required to convert that wrong into a right. Even when we are beset by adversity, we are required to turn it to good account.
One intrinsic quality of activity is movement. But in what direction? Are you moving towards your destination, or away from it? The actual motion in both cases seems to be no different in quality. The great difference between the two is that the former brings you ever nearer to your destination, while the latter takes you further and further away from it—leading you to nowhere. It is direction that is all-important.
Education is the first step towards the construction of a nation. Whenever the journey of a nation begins, it will certainly be from here; there is no other point from which to start. The real virtue of education is that it reveals to man the science of life thus making him a man in the real sense of the word.
There are two types of people in this world — the self-making type and the history-making type. The aim of those who are self-making is to serve themselves, whereas history-making people seek to serve humanity as a whole.
Just as the rose bush, along with its exquisite flowers, also possesses piercing thorns, so also does life contain an amalgam of both pleasing and displeasing objects. This is the order of nature in the world. There is nothing for us to do but to fit in with this order of nature that He has laid down. Much as we may try, it is impossible for us to have things any other way. To complain about things, then, is a fruitless exercise.
No matter how basically good the fruit trees in our orchard are, they will not blossom and bear fruit unless they are consistently well tended.
Although this world is highly competitive, there is nothing to prevent us from endeavouring to cooperate with and encourage cooperation from others.
Difficult circumstances can be used as a spur to success, but only provided that such arduous and trying periods in one’s life inspire in one a new sense of determination and do not fill one with a sense of frustration.
The really important thing in life is to make a proper start. When a man is willing to start his journey from the right point every step amounts to making progress. Nothing then can stop him from reaching his goal.
Those who only know what they want, and go all out to achieve it irrespective of others’ needs, will find their path through life strewn with obstacles and pitfalls, and it will be little wonder if they come to grief.
When an electric bulb or an electric fan stops working, we do not devote our efforts only to the bulb or the fan to make them work again, because we know that the reason often lies outside the bulb and the fan. Simply by carrying out repairs at the proper place, we can set matters right. For example, by replacing a fuse, we can re-light the lamp and set the fan in motion again. Human affairs too are often of this nature. But it is a pity that what one remembers in terms of material matters is often forgotten in solving social problems.
The occurrence of an atomic explosion in matter turns it into a vastly more powerful substance. The human personality, too, contains huge, latent potential. This potential bursts out into the open when there is an eruption within one’s soul. It breaks free when some shattering disaster afflicts one. The strings that have held one down are torn apart and begin to vibrate to the tune of life.
People become disaffected or even enraged on being criticized. The main reason is that criticism, particularly when it is true, brings one down from the high pedestal on which one has placed oneself.
In the evening, when the sun has set, if we have a sudden desire to see the sun again, there is no way that we can do so except wait through the long night for dawn. There are things for which time is of the essence.
Man in this world is forever caught in between problems and opportunities. But whatever problems he has to contend with, there are always golden opportunities, not too far away, just waiting to be availed.
Progress can seldom be made by leaps and bounds. By means of the ladder you can progress even to the stage of owning the lift, but you cannot make a success of your life by starting with the lift and expecting it to do everything for you.
The humble admission of one’s mistakes, followed by a rational appraisal of them is the first step on the road to success.
The most important cognitive and moral act in life is recognition of the truth.
Every construction has a top, which we can all see. But we some¬times forget about the base, for it lies buried, deep in the ground. Yet, it is upon this invisible base that the whole building rests.
When a man has a specific and worthwhile goal before him, he sets a great value upon his time, but when bereft of a goal, time hangs heavily upon his hands. It is then that ceremonial gatherings and vain pursuits become welcome occupations. He makes no real life for himself but depends upon others for occupation and distraction. In this way, he drifts along, like a ship without, a rudder, to the end of his useless life. On the surface, he has led a full, busy life, but, on closer inspection, he discovers, too late, that his achievements are nil, and that he has frittered away his precious existence in empty, meaningless diversions. – Maulana Wahiduddin Khan
Stinging retorts only stir up further controversy, where as light-hearted banter, or the humble submission of alternative ideas can have a tranquillizing effect—like throwing water on a blazing fire.
If one wants to start one’s career as a general, one will be hard put to it to do so. It’s just like a race where one can’t leap straight from the starting point to the finishing line. To succeed in anything, we have to be like the tree, starting from the seed, growing slowly and putting out branches, twigs, leaves and flowers when the appropriate times come around
All too often, we have to lose in order to gain. We have to resign ourselves to our lowly position until we can work ourselves up to more satisfactory heights.
Those who have some goal or the other before them never allow themselves to become enmeshed in such things because that would mean being diverted from their objective. A purposeful man always looks ahead to the future—straightforward and not towards right or left. He always thinks of long-lasting consequences rather than momentary considerations. He looks at things not from the point of view of personal desires and whims, but from the point of view of reality.
In all circumstances, persevere steadfastly in constructive activities. In the end you will emerge victorious.
It is only if he does not lose his nerve and keeps his mind open to what is practical that he will be able to overcome the obstacles in his path.
There is no doubting the fact that failure in life usually results from the quest for immediate success. The word “short-cut” may be applicable to the world of roads and footpaths, but there are no short-cuts in the struggles of life. This fact frequently evinces itself in untoward ways.
In this world just as ease always follows hardship, so fruitful results come only from arduous, painstaking processes. We should be prepared for a period of hard struggle before we can expect to reap the results we desire.
Our steps should be based on realities and not on wishful thinking or vague suppositions. If we do not pay need to the realities of existence and plan our lives accordingly, we shall have the illusion that we are heading towards a bright future and splendid results, whereas, when the next moment of darkness arrives, we shall discover that, all along, we had been heading towards darkness.
The secret of life is not to stand in a person’s way. If one does not make oneself a target for another’s vengeance, but lets everyone continue pursuing his own goal in life, then one is not going to find one’s own path blocked by others.
A negligent attitude permits people to fritter away their time, day after day, with no thought for the future.
It is all very well to be an idealist, but if one eternally seeks the ideal in people, one is bound to be disappointed.
There are few great tasks, which can be accomplished by individuals single-handedly. Only the talents of several individuals combined can achieve any substantial work. But people will only be able to work together if they are patient and tender-hearted in their outlook.
The contented man will not care whether his circumstances are good or bad. Affluence and Penury will be as one to him.
It is temperament that plays the most crucial role in the making of a nation. A character that can be depended upon through thick and thin is what in the long run builds a nation.
Every human being is born with an ego. More often than not, that ego is dormant. It
is better to leave it sleeping, for the ego can be like a snake which, when aroused, will
harm all within its reach.
The feelings of love which cement family life can be brought into being in social life through conscious deliberations. Unity can spring from a human awakening to its ultimate necessity. Where family life is governed by the heart, social life is governed by the will. There is nothing that cannot be endured for the sake of unity, provided there is the will to achieve it.
The two great virtues which are indispensable in the struggle of life are patience and fortitude.
The conviction that one’s goals are worthwhile, the observation of discipline with no contradiction between words and thoughts, cool thinking even in times of crisis—all these are qualities of mind and heart which determine success, and obviate failure in the wider field of life.
In the face of adversity his hidden capacities come to the fore and it is possible for him to reach undreamt of heights. But first and foremost there has to be the will to do so.
Complacency and a sense of comfort can be even greater vitiating factors in man’s progress through life than devastation and despair. – Maulana Wahiduddin Khan
When one has no work to occupy oneself physically or mentally, one falls a prey to morbid brooding and one’s own unending frustration which finds an outlet in negativity.
Success comes to those who firstly have the determination to achieve their ends and who, secondly, put the resources at their disposal to the best use. – Maulana Wahiduddin Khan
Opportunity seldom knocks twice, and the potentially successful man is the one who fully realizes this.
It is the challenges in life that either make men or break them.
When one is prejudiced against something, one cannot see its rationality, even if there are clear signs in support of it.
People are quick to support anything which improves their own position, or at least does not downgrade them in any way. But when something appears threatening to their position, they oppose it, regardless of its intrinsic worth.
It is important to make preparations. Only after long years of hard struggle and perseverance is it possible for one to play this part successfully.
Everything needs some price. People generally want things without paying the price.
People often talk big, but where their interest is concerned they surrender.
When you find others mistreating you, do not seek the fault in them. Seek rather the fault within yourself. By recognizing your own shortcomings and doing your best to remove them, you can better safeguard yourself against the mistreatment of others.
Every quality has both, a plus point and a minus point. A quality turns into a minus point when it becomes harmful to others.
Although the material world is limited, the world of thought is unlimited.
It is better to reckon with oneself rather than with others.
Those who possess high moral principles do not deviate from the path of justice, even when it concerns their opponent or enemy.
A ship which sails straight at a rock or an iceberg is doomed to disaster. It is the ship which veers temporarily off its course to avoid the reefs which will eventually sail safely into harbour.
Good behaviour is completely natural, straight from the heart and based on genuine consideration for others. It is not, of course, something which one “switches on” in the hopes of immediate reward, but is something rather which eventually benefits one in innumerable, often intangible, ways, simply because it makes for social harmony at its best.
Wrongdoing is that which wavers in your soul and which you dislike people finding out about.
What inspires a man more than anything is to have a great mission before him. That is what arouses a man’s hidden potential. It makes him, in short, a peak performer.
Maturity is the ability to live in peace with things we cannot change.
The more we give, the, more we receive. And never can we hope to receive more than we have actually given.
A demanding temperament compels one to go on seeking absolute truth. It prevents one from being content with half-truths and paltry successes, and one is continually spurred on to higher and greater things.
If a person allows himself to become upset by opposition, taunts or other kinds of unpleasantness, he will never reach his goals. He will simply become enmeshed in irrelevancies.
It is only utter devotion—no matter what the field of activity—that can lead to success. Only those who have devoted themselves in this world of struggle and competition can aspire to advance in life.
Corruption is a psychological evil, while lack of skill is a technical shortcoming. A psychological evil cannot be removed by technical improvement. If we are genuinely interested in making a better society in our country, we shall have to work for the psychological, or moral reform of the individuals who comprise the nation.
Those who learn virtues and teach it to others are the best among humankind. -- Prophet Muhammad
Success is the result of devotion and assiduity, and is never the result of some unasked for miracle.
If we want our efforts to bear fruit, it is essential that we should take the correct preliminary steps before plunging headlong into difficult situations. Without the necessary moral conditioning, all our steps will go awry, just like a cloth which is dyed without pretreatment.
One who is spiritually inclined resorts constantly to his inner mental life — something which no one can take away from him. Such a man possesses inner contentment, and is far above all material gain and loss.
The true leader is concerned with the future of his nation, while the false leader is concerned with his own future prospects.
Being spiritual means rectifying one's relationship with other human beings and it is far from meaning the renunciation of all contacts with the material world.
One sign of a principled person is his strictness with himself, and his tolerance towards others.
A new start begins from accepting that, in the past, you committed a blunder.
A peaceful person is one whose inner-self is so deeply immersed that in peace, no outward event can disturb his emotional balance. He takes pity on those who are easily angered. Where ordinary people become provoked, he remains blissfully serene.
Realistic thinking is that which tallies exactly with reality; which is based on facts and events, and on firm arguments; which takes stock of all matters under discussion; which does not make concessions to anything unfair; which is completely free from prejudice.
In most controversial matters there can be both easy and difficult ways of resolving the problem. Treading the path of facility usually eases matters, whereas treading the path of difficulty can cause matters to flare up with even greater intensity.
Unrealistic thinking is that which does not take the actual state of affairs into account, which is based on suppositions and conjecture, on mere opinion, rather than on fact.
The Quran makes it clear that a strong, adverse, emotional reaction such as anger does not befit the true believer, and instead cites as a mark of excellence the quality of forgiveness: “When they become angry, they are forgiving.” (42:37)
It is only when the individual is willing to step down in favour of higher principles that society as a whole can benefit. The sacrifice of the individual is the price to be paid for the glory of the nation.
All the teachings of Islam are based on two basic principles—worship of God and service of men. Without putting both of these principles into practice, there can be no true fulfillment of one’s religious duties.
Intellectual freedom is directly related to creativity. A society having intellectual freedom breeds creative people whereas a society which curbs intellectual freedom will necessarily stagnate and as a result the produce of creative mind and its growth and development will for ever be stopped.
Peace is the outcome of co-existence. And peaceful co-existence is the only way of existence on this planet. This is the lesson we learn from history. Either we co-exist or cease to exist. There is simply no other option.
The top half of a tree can only stand erect and verdant above the ground when it is prepared to bury its other half beneath the ground. This is an example which trees show to mankind; a philosopher puts it this way: “Root downward, fruit upward, that is the divine protocol.”
Any institution, nation, state which places curbs on freedom of expression will be ultimately brimming with hypocrites. In such an atmosphere sincere people can never be produced.
Islam is a scheme of spiritual development. Its goal is to establish direct communion between God and man in order that man may become the recipient of divine inspiration. In such a religion it is moderation which is of the utmost importance, not extremism or fundamentalism. It is peace which is of the utmost importance and not violence.
Peace can be attained only by accepting two simple precepts: Make all efforts to change what we can, and learn to live with the things which we cannot change.
According to a saying of the Prophet of Islam, the best person is one who, in his encounters with others, always has good things to say to them. He is beneficent to all, giving them gifts to bring them happiness.
Islam is a religion of humanity. Islam considers serving others as a great act of worship. According to the teachings of Islam, it is only in serving people that we shall have a share in God’s mercy.
It often happens that a person’s thoughts and actions are governed by his personal whims and fancies, but he pretends that they have been inspired by a love for humanity or that he is obeying a commandment of God. But his words and actions bear no relation to each other. While he is one person on the inside, he pretends to be something quite other on the outside.
There is nothing that can take the place of a receptive intellect. One who remains open to instruction will look on the whole world as living proof of divine realities. One who goes through life with a closed mind, however, is like an animal that hears and sees all, but understands nothing.
No intermediary link exists between the Creator and the creature. By remembering God, any individual at any point in time may, quite independently, establish contact with God. There is no need for any go-between.
A tree stands above the ground, fixing its roots firmly beneath the ground. It grows from beneath, upwards into the air; it does not start at the top and grow downwards. The tree is our teacher, imparting to us the lesson of nature that if we seek to progress outwardly, we must first strengthen ourselves inwardly; we must begin from the base of our own selves before we can hope to build society anew.
One can always overcome one’s misfortunes and be the gainer once again, provided one remains patient and perseveres in one’s struggles, never losing hope of God’s succour.
The true believer is one who accepts God’s reality before any visible signs appear to support it. This world is a world of trial, in which God appears only to those who have the ability to penetrate the divine disguise.
So long as you avoid provoking the other person, he remains a human being. But no sooner do you provoke him than that very same person will descend to the level of animals. Awaken human nature in others. Let the animal nature remain dormant. This is the only certain formula for a harmonious social existence.
An inquisitive mind is a sine qua non for the acquisition of knowledge. Only those who are possessed of this quality will achieve great success in intellectual and academic fields. Those devoid of this spirit will remain static, and will fail to climb to the top of the ladder of success.
Wisdom lies in knowing what is possible and what is not possible in terms of the circumstances.
The greatest mark of a lofty nature is the ability to set aside the grievances and differences in order to support another, whereas a man of baser metal would do the very opposite.
Reacting to provocation brings nothing but negative results, whereas ignoring provocation leaves the way clear to embark on planned construction and consolidation. It is the law of this world that those who act make progress, while those who react are doomed to failure.
Those who have no spiritual inclinations allow themselves to be constantly influenced by their immediate surroundings and thus remain unhappily embroiled in human strife. They cannot, like spiritual people, smile when abused. Nor, in countless situations, can they adopt the attitude of ‘forgive and forget.’ They reach such a low ebb mentally and emotionally, that, spiritually, they become incapable of making progress.
By opting for simplicity one is able to put his time to the best use by not wasting it on irrelevant matters. He does not let his attention be diverted to things which are inessential so far as his goal is concerned.
A man who has discovered God finds peace in natural things. Unnatural and artificial things appear to him as if they cause his inner world to disintegrate and create obstacles to the progress of his spiritual journey.
A believer is one who finds God. Such a person by his very nature becomes a simplicity-loving person. In his eyes pretensions lose their attraction.
The life that the true believer desires in this world can be lived only in the propitious atmosphere which flowers in conditions of peace.
In no circumstances will the true believer ever tolerate the disruption of peace.
When negatively affected by another’s unpalatable behaviour, your mental equilibrium is upset. On the other hand, emotionally untouched by such behaviour, your mind will fully retain its equilibrium and, without wasting a single moment, you will continue to perform your work in the normal way.
They are the ones who have discovered God’s existence from His signs; those who, having been given complete freedom of word and deed have voluntarily placed constraints upon themselves; those who relish taking the back seats while others scramble for the front rows. These are the people who give their lives to lay solid foundations while others rush to find places right on tops of the domes.
When he who appears to be silent, he is so for others, not for himself. Remaining silent as far the external world goes, he starts conversing with his internal world.
When one is silent, one’s focus becomes oneself rather than extraneous matters. One eschews superficiality and engages with deeper realities.
Sometimes people bring ruin upon themselves by being too emotional, but they too have the chance to reach their goal of success by remaining cool and rational in their approach on subsequent occasions.
Perseverance is a virtue which can be practised at all times, even by one who is crippled by a disease, and even by one who had failed to get a degree from a university.
For life as a whole, disparateness is actually a great blessing: the good points of one man may compensate for the shortcomings of another.
Nobody in this world is perfect. If a man is endowed with some good qualities, he may be lacking in others.
The habit of tolerance prevents a man from wasting his time and talent on unnecessary matters.
If people could only learn to tolerate others’ differences, their very forbearance would become a great enabling factor in collective human development.
Paradise is the supreme reward which God gives to His special servants for their deserving actions.
“When one’s ego is hurt,” says a contemporary psychologist, “it turns into super-ego, and the result is breakdown.”
In this competitive world, those who want concessions will always find themselves in the back seat. It is only those who make every effort to earn excellent qualifications will ever come to the fore.
When man speaks he is in a limited domain, but when he is silent he finds himself in the unlimited vastness of the world.
All learning is acquired in the school of hard work; all progress is achieved at the price of unflagging effort.
To know the Art of Objection Management learn tight-rope walking. Every objection can be managed if you are not harsh, if you do it politely.
The greatest thing in life is intellectual development and one method to develop this quality is intellectual exchange.
It is said: “It requires ten quintal wisdom to understand one quintal of knowledge.” For success the biggest condition is, therefore, wisdom.
Criticism means positive exchange. When two minds interact, a spark is produced, thus a third thing emerges. This is a great blessing.
Every quality is a plus until it becomes harmful to others. That is, till the time it does not hit somebody’s nose it is a plus point.
The formula of success comprises of only six words: Ignore the minus, avail the plus.
Seeing a problem as a problem is the problem. If you see a problem as a normal event then there is no problem.
True faith leads man away from artificial things to nature, where simplicity is the rule. He develops a liking for a simple way of life which is more natural. Naturalness is in accordance with modesty and humility, which are great virtues in the eyes of God.
“For men, opportunities will never cease.” This means that just as the sun will never cease to rise, morning is always followed by night; so does success inevitably follow failure. However, just as the earth must revolve unceasingly if morning is to follow night so must man be unremitting in his struggle to reach his final goal.
If you want to live like a flower you will find your way to a bed of flowers. But if your existence is replete with thorns, you will find a world full of thorny shrubs. This means that in order to lead a life in this world, finding good atmosphere is in one’s own power. You become friends of others and everyone will become your friend. You bear with the unpleasantness of others then you will find people around you who bear with the unpleasant thing from you. You benefit others and then you will find a world where everyone will be busy benefiting others.
When the inner man is awakened, you can be sure that the person concerned will always give a just verdict in his dealings with others. It is no longer within his power to be cruel or unjust.
The greater ill-effect of war is that it limits opportunities whereas the greatest benefit of peace is that it opens up opportunities to the ultimate extent. War invariably results in further loss, while peace invariably results in further gain. That is why Islam teaches us to avoid war and confrontation at all costs and commands us to establish peace to the greatest possible degree. Peace enables normal relations to be established between people. Feelings of love and friendship prevail in such a situation. In a favourable atmosphere constructive activities flourish and the existing resources can be used for development or activities. A positive bent of mind will prevail which will help develop academic and intellectual activities.
One should never do anything of any importance when in an angry mood. Steps to take action should be taken only after all anger has subsided. This will mean fewer setbacks and more successes in life.
It is temperament that plays the most crucial role in the making of a nation. It is important in nation-building in the way that bricks are important in any kind of construction work. A house made of unfired bricks is unsafe, because any calamity, even a minor one, can bring it tumbling down. A building, on the other hand, which is made of kiln-fired bricks, can be trusted to withstand the onslaught of tempests and floods. A character so tempered that it can be depended upon through thick and thin—like the kiln-fired brick—is what in the long run builds a nation, for it is only such a temperament which can remain attuned to the more and more complex procedures of industrialization and remain steadfastly geared to national progress.
We must never lose sight of the fact that we are not lone travellers on this earth. There are always others who are trying to race ahead of us in this world of competition. The resulting situation can be approached in two entirely different ways. One is to collide with anything which obstructs our path. The other is to circumvent obstacles and then to go on our way. Clearly, the first is self-destructive, while the second, in avoiding confrontations, is much more likely to prove advantageous. A ship which sails straight at a rock or an iceberg is doomed to disaster. It is the ship which veers temporarily off its course to avoid the reefs which will eventually sail safely into harbour.
Perhaps one of the main reasons why people fail to attach them¬selves to religion in the modern age is that the teachings of reli¬gion cannot be observed or experienced in the scientific sense of the word. Belief in God and the afterlife, which is the very crux of religion, appears to most people as particularly hypothetical and far¬fetched: if something cannot be seen, how can it be believed? According to me, this argument was valid when science had reached only the macro world and when ‘only what was observable was the reality’. The atom was once considered to be the smallest unit of the observable material world. But when the atom was split, it was confirmed that it was nothing but a mad dance of energy waves or electrons, which could not be observed. Scientists however continued to believe in the concept of the atom, albeit unobservable. A new logic then came into being. Not only was the direct or observable argument thought to be valid, but inferential arguments or the invisible sources of visible effects were also considered valid. An example of the latter is that X-rays are not visible to the naked eye, but their effect can be seen when we observe the X-ray film. Using the valid inferential argument, if you can believe in the unseen X-rays as you can see their effect, why can you not believe in an unseen God, whose meaningful creation – the Universe you see all around you and the afterlife?
In this world, the option one has to take is not between, ‘Universe without God’ and the ‘Universe with God’. The option is actually between the ‘Universe with God’ and ‘No Universe at all’. Since we cannot, for obvious reasons, opt for the latter proposition, we are in fact left with no other option except the former — the ‘Universe with God’.
Corruption is a psychological evil, while lack of skill is a technical shortcoming. A psychological evil cannot be removed by technical improvement. If we are genuinely interested in making a better society, we shall have to work for the psychological, or moral reform of the individuals who comprise the nation. Merely bringing about an increase in the number of technical courses available will not make them turn over a new leaf.
The aura of greatness that surrounds humans in this world has no real substance. It is just a facade put on for the test of men. It is those who see through this facade, and realize that no one besides God has any real greatness, who will be successful in the next world, where only His greatness will remain. As for those who let the greatness of mere mortals rule their lives, their greatness will perish and they will be left out in the cold: the ones in whose shadow they had lived will be there no more to tower over them.
The only way for people to follow consistent and universal norms of behaviour is for them to bow to the law of God rather than the law of man. Obedience to One God makes one treat all mankind as one: everyone becomes equally deserving of good and fair treatment. God’s law is universally applicable, whereas the law of man applies in some places but not in others.
People tend to overlook the fact that professional skill and ability achieved by hard struggle is an investment in itself. Even if they fail to find an immediate outlet, life’s labours are never lost in the long run. Sooner or later opportunities are bound to present themselves to draw on such painfully acquired skills.
Thinking of oneself in relation to other men might lead to arrogance, for it is possible that one will be better off than them; one might hold a higher status in life. But when one thinks of oneself in relation to the vast universe arrogance disappears, for it becomes apparent how small and insignificant one is. God has created the universe so that we may observe and ponder over it; so that realization of its greatness may lead us to a realization of what a small part we ourselves occupy in it; so that we may be imbued with the quality of humility, which is the greatest and most realistic quality that man can have.
It is a truth that in all societies people have some cause or the other for complaint against those with whom they come into contact. But retaliation is no solution to this problem. The solution lies rather in rising above such feelings of vengefulness. The deliberate overlooking of such matters can diminish the existing tensions, whereas retaliation and revenge only serve to aggravate the situation. But it is no simple matter to stifle such feelings. Man can give up something only when he receives something greater in return. The feeling of a cause having been lost and justice not having been done can only be overcome by gaining some ‘greater good’. The only such ‘greater good’ is the life of the hereafter. Faith in the next, eternal world gives man this greater good, compared to which everything else is insignificant. That is why those who have discovered faith in the life hereafter will readily bear any other loss.
Far from being an armed struggle, jihad is a peaceful struggle.
Migration or hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad is a clear example of abandoning violent solutions in favour of peaceful solutions.
Now, a peaceful course of action is not just one of the possibilities: it is the only feasible and result-oriented option.
Whenever the Prophet had to choose between two courses, he would always opt for the easier course.
Life cannot be free from unpleasant things. All one can do is forget the unpleasant things and try to make life pleasant.
Wishing others ill is a poison, half of which one has to drink oneself.
He who cannot say ‘I have erred’ is the one who is most in error.
Consultation with others saves you from your own mistakes.
There is always a good man hidden inside a bad man. Try to find this hidden man, then you will not have to complain against anyone.
Allowing emotion to govern one’s actions brings failure. Acting with restraint brings success.
One great truth that man learns from experience is that there is a flower with every thorn and a thorn with every flower.
A wise man is one whose rival gets to know his plans only after he has brought them to completion.
One who cooks in a wooden pot is fated to remain hungry forever.
Evil can have no beginning but from pride nor any end but from humility.

The secret of success for a person of a group is in being able to take the most reasonable decisions on the most emotional occasions.
Just as a small jug cannot hold a large quantity of water, so a small heart and great success do not go together.
Patience is not inaction. Patience is the virtue needed for systematic, planned action.
If you don’t know how to speak, then learn how to keep quiet. Because keeping quiet is as important as speaking.
One who indulges in wishful thinking often awaits the conclusion of a journey which has not even begun.
The ladder to progress is man’s own struggle but many think that the shortest route to progress is in the destruction of others.
The secret of success lies in man's learning the secret of his failure.
No seed turns into a tree by leaps and bounds. Similarly, it is not possible for a person to reach his destination without travelling for the requisite period of time.
If you want to be a success in this world, the first thing you have to do is display enough courage to welcome failures.
The wind carries away the scattered particles of sand, causing them to float them all around. But when these particles of sand join together to make a mountain, no tempest is strong enough to shake them.
The true man’s life is subordinated to principles, while the false man’s life is subordinated to interests.
When two people are quarrelling, both are at fault; if one were in the right, he would have left the place where the quarrel started, and then it would have come to a stop by itself.
Man is born to succeed, but by his negligence he makes himself into a failure.
The common man lives in his own greatness. The believer lives in the greatness of God.
The simplest way to keep away from other’s evils is to keep others away from one’s own evils.
Complaining about others is often an admission of one’s own incompetence.
If your building is weak, you cannot prevent it from being washed away by the flood, however many protestations to the contrary you may make.
The false man bows before power. The true man bows to argument.
Crossing bridges when you come to them, exploiting opportunities when they come your way, are the real secrets of success in the present world.
Everyone has lost out on his yesterday. The successful man is one who does not lose out on his today.
Success depends on the ability to convert unfavourable circumstances into favourable ones.
Be large of heart and succeed. Be small of heart and fail.
Man has to pay the price for his own faults. But after making a mistake, he tries to find someone who will pay the price for him.
Life is a continuous trial. After falling ten times, being able to rise the eleventh time is success.
No one puts out other people’s lamps. It is the lack of oil, which puts them out.
No one fights for another: everyone has to fight life’s battles himself.
The day will in any case come to an end in twelve hour’s time, whether you make good use of it, or you waste it.
It is not in the least difficult for one who can conquer himself to conquer others.
Man has a hidden treasure within him, difficulties and setbacks bring it forth.
When a piece of wood breaks up, it breaks into two or into many parts, but there is no question of defeat and destruction for a living being. When an amoeba breaks up, it becomes two.
If you want to move mountains, you must first of all learn to move particles.
The world is a testing ground for wisdom. It is not a political platform for protests and clamour.
It is easier by far to blame others than to accept the responsibility oneself.
Man should give out fragrance like the flowers and shine like the sun. This is the message that the world is delivering daily in its silent language.
If man could but know the hopeful circumstances of tomorrow, he would never lose heart over the depressing circumstances of today.
No one is so powerful that he can harm others without harming himself.
A negative mentality is shaped by history. A positive mentality shapes history.
Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or nation.
Error is the discipline through which we advance.
The hopeful man sees success where others see failure, sunshine where others see shadows and storm.
The reason many people fail to recognize opportunity is because it comes disguised as hard work.
Maturity is perseverance, sweating out a project despite setbacks.
Do not rail at the darkness, light a candle and the darkness will of itself disappear.
Whoever seeks to obtain small benefits at the risk of great dangers is like a fisherman who uses a hook of gold; should it come off, no catch would compensate the loss.
Maturity is the ability to live in peace with things we cannot change.
If someone pelts you with stones, do not quarrel with him. Try rather to raise yourself to such a height that the stones cannot reach you.

Submission to God is the only religion for both man and the universe.
Except in fiction, behaviour based on individualism cannot work.
What is simplicity? Confining yourself to the necessities of life.
The concept of grassroots is valid in terms of democratic election, but it is not a valid for a revolution. People fail to differentiate between democratic election and a real revolution. You need to address the individual mind to bring in a revolution.
In the Western world all educated people maintain a dairy. It is a part of Western life, and educated person cannot afford to not maintain a diary. A diary has numerous benefits. A diary becomes a way of introspection. Everyday you have to write something in it. A French King used to maintain a diary, one day he went hunting, but that day he could not hunt down any animal. He had nothing to write so he wrote only one word: “Nothing.”
While patience makes it possible to continue with life’s journey, impatience will ultimately prevent you from reaching your chosen destination.
People often talk big, but where their interest is concerned they surrender.
If you want to be a wise person be comfortable with all irrespective of others’ behaviour.
A new start begins from accepting that, in the past, you committed a blunder.
As far as the external appearance is concerned both behaviour, patience and cowardice, seem similar. But internally they are quite different. Patience is a principled behaviour while cowardice is a behaviour which is based on sheer interest. If you are satisfied that what you are doing is based on a well-considered principle, then, your case is a case of patience rather than a case of cowardice. Don't bother if people call you a coward.
It is comparison that creates the spirit of shukr (thanksgiving) in your personality. Without comparison there is no shukr. Man is not the maker of planet earth, therefore, the only price he can give to live on it is shukr. One who does not do shukr has no right to live on earth.
Individualism is apparently a beautiful idea but it is not workable. One who insists on individualism is bound to become a hypocrite. He will be forced to adopt the policy of adjustment when his interest is at stake and where he finds that his interest is not at stake he becomes indifferent to the other members of the society.
If you want to live with a tension-free mind, you have only one option: ignore your problems, don't try to solve them.
Every quality has plus point and minus point, both. A quality turns into a minus point when it becomes harmful to others.Every quality has plus point and minus point, both. A quality turns into a minus point when it becomes harmful to others.
Start from what is possible today, and by tomorrow you will reach what seems impossible.
In every narration or event, we must differentiate between the relevant and the irrelevant, if we do not do so, the impact reduces.
The process of seeking knowledge is a mutual process. During this process everyone gains something from others. Here taker is the giver and giver is the taker. Everyone serves both the roles.
One cannot afford to damage his own identity. No one can say something which will ruin his image or identity. How can one afford such a statement which disproves his being knowledgeable?
There are two kinds of human qualities: one that have commercial values, and the other which have no commercial value. Logical analysis has no commercial analysis; it is though a high quality. But management has a great commercial value.
The solution, to most problems, is very simple: Change your habit. That is, change your habit and you will be the happiest person of the world.
Explain things in such a manner that you may find an instant solution of the problem you are facing. This is the only method to live with a positive mind; otherwise you are doomed to live in negativity. You cannot afford the policy of ‘wait’. We cannot wait, we have to find out an instant solution, because the alternative is living in negativity, and negativity has to be erased at any cost. Living in negativity is like living in poison. Negativity is like a psychological poison. So, don’t wait for tomorrow, you have to manage your negativity today.
One has to accept certain things in life either willingly or unwillingly. Learn the art of acceptance. It is easy to reject, but only a great mind can accept. Acceptance is a phenomenon of maturity. Man is a justification seeking animal. So, maturity means the ability to justify your action. Maturity means more knowledge, more experience. It is a process that occurs on an unconscious level. If you are a developed mind then your mind can analyse instantly. Only he is a developed mind who, consciously or unconsciously, can analyse things instantly. He does not need to refer to books, data or encyclopædia.
Either try to understand what is under discussion or learn to say that I have not understood it.
A man should always work according to the following hadith: “The best task is that which you can do consistently, or continuously.”
Heart is not simply a source of circulation of blood. That is just one aspect of the heart. There is another aspect; that is, it records your findings, your achievements. So, the heart is destined to record all your experiences at every beat. You have to, therefore, acquire new experience constantly, every moment, every second; otherwise, your register will be left blank. It might seem difficult. But your mind has enormous capacity to do this job. If a mechanical computer can make a billion calculations in a second, why can a mind not? Mind is a super computer. Mind is a living computer. The problem is that we fail to utilize your mind. Everyone throughout History has failed to utilize his mind. Try to activate your mind so that your register may not go blank. Sufis knew this fact but only in physical terms. They would say Allah at every beat of the heart. This was foolish. What is required is not to simply repeat a word, but to have some new experience. You should acquire some new thought, new wisdom at every beat. This is not beyond your capacity. It is quite within your capacity. Therefore, the Sufi concept was a reduced form of zikr. Sufis discovered this fact but in a reduced manner. Sufis practiced this so much that it became a part of their unconscious mind. But it was ridiculous. My Sufism is based on thinking and wisdom, whereas their Sufism is based on literal recitation. They would think that by saying Allah at every beat of the heart, they are doing as much zikr as the number of heart beats they have. We have seventy-two heartbeats per minute. On an average, we can say, one heartbeat per second. So, we must make at least one discovery every second. This does not mean that you will be able to say this is my discover number one, and that this is my discover number two. Your mind is not going to count the number of discoveries you make every passing minute. Mind is a very creative thing. It will discover a new thing every second, but it will not count and tell, or calculate the number of discoveries that you have made. Mind is not mechanical, it is creative. If you can elaborate one discovery it could mean many discoveries.
Your plans should not be made on the basis of your ambitions but on the basis of the reality.
To understand the Quran the ulema say you need to know eighteen disciplines. But in reality to understand the Quran you need three things: the Arabic language, taddabbur, and dua. If you read the translation you can only get the basics, you will not understand its profoundness. However, knowing Arabic is not enough. You need honesty and sincerity. Moreover, you have to know the modern framework. If you read traditional books you will not discover the Quran in the new framework. You have to know the age you are living in. You have two options either understand the Quran in the traditional framework or understand it in the modern context. Except my books there is no source to acquire an understanding of the Quran in the context of the modern times. When you have the traditional framework, it fails to give you that kind of conviction which is needed in the present age.
Freedom is the result of your own management. Freedom cannot be granted on a piece of paper. You have to manage your life, and freedom will be the result of it.
Man is born in contradictions. First of all you have to learn the art of contradiction management.
All psychological problems are at the level of the mind and can be solved at the level of the mind.
You have to learn the Art of Objection Management, and for it you have to learn tight-rope walking. It is easy because people are not too difficult to tackle. Every objection can be managed if you are not harsh, if you do it politely. This is a great quality.
For success the biggest condition is wisdom. You cannot become a super achiever without it. There is a saying: “It requires ten quintal wisdom to understand one quintal of knowledge.” For example, for three years the Prophet worked secretly and then made an announcement, this is wisdom. But first of all you have to discover your own self. And become a man of principles.
Criticism is the highest phenomenon. Criticism means positive exchange. When two minds interact, a sparking happens, and a third thing emerges, that is criticism. This is a great blessing. And God himself has set an example of criticism. When God said, I am going to appoint a Successor on Earth – obviously after saying this He threw the floor open only then – the angels said: Man will spread bloodshed. God did not take offence, He responded positively. You have to take criticism with a normal mind and as a normal practice.
Every quality has both a plus point and a minus point. A quality turns into a minus point when it becomes harmful to others. That is, till the time it does not hit the nose of a person it is a plus point, but as soon as it hits somebody's nose, it turns into a negative point.
The greatest thing in life is intellectual development and one source to develop this quality is intellectual exchange. But it requires a price. What is this price? The price is that you have to live in complete positivity, every moment there are reasons to fall in negativity, you can't avoid such instances, but you have to pacify yourself instantly without losing a second.
Life is a test for everyone. Every situation calls you to go to contemplation. Every situation is an intellectual challenge. Every situation awakens your mind. Every situation compels you to find out the plus items in the jungle of minus items. The formula of success comprises of only six words:
Ignore the minus, avail the plus.
When you find some problem in the external world, believe in advance that the real place where the problem exists is only in your own mind. So, analyse the situation and try to re-engineer your mind, and then you will find that the problem is completely solved. Seeing a problem as a problem is the problem. If you see a problem as a normal event then there is no problem.
A problem is an inevitable natural phenomenon. When you are immature you see a problem as a problem, but when you are mature, you are able to see the problem as a normal event then there is no problem. It all depends upon your angle of vision.
Sheikh Sadi has narrated a story in his book, Gulistan that, once, he was walking on a street barefoot, and was complaining that he had no shoes to wear, but as he walked on, he saw a man who had lost his legs. Sheikh Sadi compared himself with this man. He said to himself: I am without shoes but this man is without legs so I am better than this man. Thus, he managed the tension and became normal.
The society must know how you will behave in any condition. Those who live in such a manner that the society can predict how they will behave in a given situation, are predictable people. Those who are not predictable in this sense, they become unwanted for the society, sooner or later. You cannot afford this, because society is for man what water is for fish. Man, therefore, cannot live outside society. So, you have to know that it is your destiny to fulfil the expectations of the society about you.
If you have a good excuse, don’t use it. Taking excuse is disastrous. It is suicide. It is like destroying yourself. How can you afford to destroy yourself? One who lives in excuses is like one who has inhaled poison and is not ready to exhale it. No one can afford this kind of behaviour.
A bad thought is not a sin. But it is harmful in terms of personality development. If a bad thought comes occasionally then it is not harmful, but if someone starts to live in it, then it is harmful for personality development.
The greatest thing in life is intellectual development and one source to develop this quality is intellectual exchange. But it requires a price. What is this price? The price is that you have to live in complete positivity, every moment there are reasons to fall in negativity, you cannot avoid such instances, but you have to pacify yourself instantly without losing a second.

What is marriage? Marriage is establishing a relationship between two parties without having a blood relationship, it is this uncommon relationship which is responsible for all those disputes between husbands and wives. Know this fact and you will make your marry life a happy life.
I am an old man, according to my long experience I can say that life is adjustment; life begins from adjustment and ends at adjustment. Moreover adjustment is not a passive attitude, it is a practical wisdom in the best sense of the word.
There is no tasty food and food without taste, is a wrong categorization, in fact every food is tasty. It is one's unnatural habit which makes some food tasty and some food without taste.
What is the secret of courage? Be a well-wisher to all and you will be the most courages person of the world.
Learning spirit is the greatest spirit in a man or a woman. Learning spirit is the greatest source of intellectual development but the learning process requires modesty, without modesty there is no learning process at all.
There are reports that the Ark of Noah has been found. Five thousand years ago, the Ark of Noah settled at a mountain of Ararat, it was hidden under the thick glaciers. It was the process of melting of ice that the Ark of Noah became visible to man, then some people reached the Ark and applied the technique of Carbon Dating. This application testified that this Ark is the same that is referred in the Bible and the Quran. This is not a simple discovery, according to the Quran when the Ark of Noah will be discovered it will only tell us that the second flood is very near that is the Doomsday.
People the world over are trying to find a solution to terrorism. The authorities are trying to crush the terror menace through legal action; western powers are trying to crush it through warfare; while the reformers are trying to curb it by engaging in condemnation. However these methods are, apparently, proving ineffective. Then what is the solution to terrorism? According to me the present problem of terrorism is based on an ideology and an ideology cannot be countered or killed through legal action or by mere condemnation. We have to develop a counter-ideology to overcome it.
The ideology behind present-day terrorism is that, Islam being a political system, it is the duty of all Muslims to establish Islamic rule in the world. This was not prevalent during the time of the Prophet Muhammad. It is a later innovation which was developed in the last few centuries by a handful of people. Having become widespread in the Muslim world today, it is leading to present-day violence. A large number of Muslims, and especially many easily influenced youth, have become obsessed with this ideology and are trying to establish the political rule of Islam, thinking it to be their ticket to paradise. Having failed to achieve this objective of establishing Islamic rule by the peaceful method, they have started resorting to suicide bombing, the idea being that if we cannot eliminate non-Islamic rule, then let us at least de-stabilize it and pave the way for Islamic rule.
I have studied Islam from its original sources—the Quran and Hadith. I can say with certainty that this political interpretation of Islam is an innovation and the real Islam, as followed by Prophet Muhammad and his early followers, is based upon peace, compassion and tolerance.
Peace is not prevalent in the world as people the world over are acting intolerantly and indulging in acts of violence, saying, “Give us justice and peace will ensue”. But when people, ostensibly seeking justice, stoop to violence, peace can never prevail. Peace is always desirable for its own sake, and every other desirable state comes after peace, not along with it. So, the maxim to follow, when peace is the desired state, is:
‘Ignore the problems, avail of the opportunities.’
Once people become tolerant and obtain peace for its own sake, what that actually does is open up opportunities—it creates favourable conditions, which enable people to strive for their ideals, eventually attaining justice and other constructive ends. This is the ideology of peace.
By ignoring the problems and availing the opportunities, one can obtain all that he originally was asking for—just by being patient and tolerant. This happens due to the law of nature. When the individual refrains from making a controversial matter into one of prestige, this gives rise to serious thinking. This non-emotional thinking helps him to understand that if he were to walk out of the point of controversy he would find all other paths open to him.
According to me this ideology of peace, based on the original sources of Islam, can counter the ideology of violence. The Prophet Muhammad provides a very clear historical example of this in his method of negotiating the Hudaybiyya peace treaty. On this occasion he brought matters to a successful conclusion by unilaterally accepting all the conditions of his opponents. In this peace treaty, the Prophet had not apparently received justice or his rights. But what was in effect a 10-year no-war pact, gave the Prophet an opportunity to work uninterruptedly on a constructive programme which would otherwise have been impossible. By means of this peaceful non-political programme, the Prophet and his companions were able to consolidate themselves so thoroughly that they had no need to wage war: they were able to take control of Makkah peacefully.
The ideology of peace is the solution to terrorism. It is derived from the seerat of the Prophet. It banishes the notion that there can be anything acceptable about terrorism. Islam is a completely peaceful religion and the Islamic method is a completely peaceful method.
